  • Sizing and tongue-slippage solved!
بواسطة yodooood في 07 February 2017

Just received my James-Bond-black, Danner Mountain Light II boots, and I LOVE THEM!! I am so glad that I read a ton of reviews on the Danner boots before buying -- regarding sizing. People are saying all sorts of things -- "size down", "size up", "half size", "full size", "D width", "EE width", etc. ...and it was making me nervous. Well, I'm here to say that I got the perfect size! Woot! Go me!

    SIZING:
I wear a lot of Nikes, and am a for-sure size 11 in the brand. I decided to size down to the 10.5, and order the wider EE and am glad that I did. They fit perfectly well, offering enough room to wiggle my toes in normal Hanes, everyday socks, and they have just enough room for my thicker hiking socks without being too constrictive. I went with the EE, wider width after reading the "fit" section of the Danner Mountain Light II page. They say that the Mountain Light "II" is narrower intentionally (even though it's marked as a standard D width) and to select the wider "EE" size if you have normal to wide feet, FYI. I'm guessing that the regular Mountain Light (not "II") D width would be more of a standard "D" width.

Anyhoo, if you, like me, are comfortable in size 11 Nike's, a Danner Mountain Light II in 10.5EE should work for you.

    TONGUE SLIPPAGE - SOLVED!:
I noticed that there were a few reviews talking about how the boot's tongue would annoyingly shift to the side when you're wearing the boots -- and this would really drive me crazy too. Well, check out my pics. I was looking closely at the tongue, and it actually has a centering tab pre-cut in the leather. It's really hard to see and is actually glued to the padding inside the tongue for some reason. Being the clever double-O agent that I am, I used a plastic chopstick to open the tab and it worked like a charm! Hope it helps...

  • From Hiker to Hipster... unfortunately.
    بواسطة Man_of_all_trades في 03 July 2018

These are really great boots, but not for hiking. They are very well made in America, the waterproofing is great, and let’s face it, they just look cool. They will hold up for a very long time, if you can handle wearing them.

I wanted a sturdy (stiff) boot since I do most of my hiking on Sierra Nevada granite. The terrain has punished my feet too many times, and I thought these Danners would be great for that. And they are, but... the tongue is so painful. The tongue has extra folds that pinch the top of your foot. The problem lies in trying to get the laces tight enough to prevent heel slipping, but to do so, the top of your foot feels like it’s in a medieval torture chamber. I think an extra set of speed hooks would do wonders for these boots, but that’s up to their designers. And this pain is not because I didn’t break them in. I wore them for short walks for several weeks, then a few 5 milers, and the longest (and most painful) 9 mile hike up a peak with 3000’ elevation gain. I couldn’t take the pain on the top of my foot, so I loosened the laces a bit, and got some of the biggest blisters I’ve ever seen.

If these boots fit you absolutely perfectly, they could serve you well as a hiking boot. And yes, I did exchange my first pair for a better size, but still the pain described above. I have now relegated these to a hipster fashion boot. They go perfectly with selvedge jeans and a buffalo plaid flannel to complete the “Lumber Sexual” look. I gave these 4 stars because the quality really is top notch, but just not for my feet.

  • Awesome boot, the provided insoles suck. MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE FIT AND SIZING.
بواسطة Andrew في 14 February 2019

Been wearing the boots for over a month now, and they are great. The Mountain Light II is, by design, a tighter fitting boot than the standard Mountain Light. Please be aware of this! They are designed to be snug, and fit like a glove. You must take this into account. I normally wear a 12 or 13, since 12.5's don't exist in most brands. I normally wear a regular width (D) boot and shoe. I ordered these as a 12, but ordered them in EE, which is wide, and not what I would normally order. I followed the directions on Danners website about sizing for these boots. I measured my foot, and knowing they were narrow boots, I ordered the EE size. They showed up, and they fit perfect. I feel the D would have been TOO NARROW for my NORMAL width foot.

All that being said, the boots have been great. They needed some serious break in being that they are good heavy leather. I wore them around the house and office for light duty for a few weeks before I took them out in the wild. Since then, they've been on a few chukar hunts, and pulled lots of outdoor work duty around my property. I have been wearing them daily ever since they broke in.

Great fit and finish, comfortable once broken in, and solid. I don't have much issue with tongue slippage as others do.

I swapped out the green laces for Red paracord. Much better.

be aware these come with the Danner "airthotics" insoles. They are a super slippery white plastic heel cup. My heel kept sliding in them, so I tossed them out and bought a set of Superfeet. Much better. Its unfortunate that they include a $30 pair of insoles that in my opinion are junk, I'd expect better for a nearly $400 pair of boots. But, given that they cost that much and should last a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time, Spending another $50 on a quality pair of insoles wasnt a big deal.

It might be petty, but the insoles are the reason I'm giving this boot a 4 star instead of 5. Again, for an average retail of nearly $400 after tax, they should have nailed that.

  • While these boots are indeed great quality and look wonderful
بواسطة aig في 11 November 2017

While these boots are indeed great quality and look wonderful, I have to at this point agree with many reviewers of similar Danner Mountain boots that there is a design flaw with the tongue where the folds of the leather dig into the top of your foot. This is the fourth pair I've ordered to try and make sure it wasn't an anomaly, and despite various sizes, colors, styles, the issue persists. It is impossible not to feel the tongue digging into the foot (as well as slipping to the side at all times -- another persistent issue pointed out by many. I like the concept of these boots and would love to own and wear a pair; the design, however, makes that impossible for me.

  • Excellent boot but the crackling sound is real and very annoying.
بواسطة LC في 04 March 2015

This is an excellent boot, and definitely worth its price. The size is true to the Brannock Device, so for a foot that has been measured properly, it will fit as expected. While measuring, however, it is important to keep in consideration the type of socks that will be used with the boot, but that is a standard procedure recommended by the Brannock Device anyway. Of course, contrary to some of the lighter boots (that will also last much less), this is top quality leather and needs to be broken in. I have used the recommended leather dressing from Danner, and it does help in the breaking in process as stated. Quite recommended. Once the boot is broken in, it is comfortable and wearable. Some people state that they order a larger size because at first the boot feels a bit snug. However, that would seem to be a good formula for blisters. When hiking, I like to feel the boot wrap around the foot snug (not uncomfortable) so that the foot will not slide and cause blisters. Breaking in this boot will give you that type of fitting. My only reservation is the style of the tongue. It is nice and it would seem functional, but the leather, the way it is cut and sown together, seems to bunch, creating excessive volume on the top of the foot. Once laced, that may create some discomfort for those who are sensitive on the top of their feet. The outer sole is great for hiking. The way the heel is shaped provides great support when stepping over branches or rocks as the grips of the Vibram sole are continuous under the shoe. Some other soles have a slippery spot between the ball of the foot and the heel.

UPDATE: After beginning to break in these boots, unfortunately I run into the problem several other people have encountered: the right heel would make a loud crackling sound at every step. Obviously something definitely wrong with the boot. The sound is way too loud to ignore.
