  • Narrower than a pair of pointy-toed goth boots!
بواسطة foglark في 28 December 2018

I wanted to like these boots because they are made in Canada, but they are the most painfully ill-fitting boots I have ever worn. They are both too large and too small. I bought them as an emergency replacement for my previous pair of work boots, which I discovered had cracks in the soles when I waded into a shallow wetland carrying bundles of willow stakes and ended up with waterlogged socks. Whoever designed them apparently has a fetish for freakishly long, narrow feet, because the size 6 is narrow enough to break bones, but has a ton of excess length and weird floppiness in the ankles and calves. I have average width feet and thought that going up a size from a 5 to a 6 would give me enough room to wear an extra pair of socks on winter days when I'm working in standing water all day, but the 6 pinches so tightly across the toe box that wearing an extra pair of socks makes my feet even colder. Two stars for keeping the water out, but if I could give negative stars for comfort I would! And in case anyone is inclined to think I have chubby feet, I am 5'2", 120 lbs with an athletic build and I can assure you that I am not trying to stuff overweight feet into these boots!

TL;DR: These boots bear more resemblance to a medieval torture device than a pair of work boots, and as such it would be a fitting punishment for the folks at Baffin to do my job for a day while wearing their own poorly designed boots.

As a side note, I would like to respectfully ask that people who buy workwear and only ever use it to take the dog for a walk or do light yard work refrain from reviewing it. A large number of well-intentioned but misleading positive reviews can give gear manufacturers and consumers the false impression that a product is adequately designed to withstand the wear and tear of a rugged work environment when it really isn't, or worse -- that no one ever uses it in such an environment. Over time, this inaccurate feedback leads to dangerously underdesigned gear being sold as workwear. Gear that fails in cold, wet conditions puts outdoor workers at risk of on the job injuries, cold stress, and hypothermia. Women's workwear in particular tends to be poorly made and prone to failure. Is it because gear manufacturers are sexist, or are women unwittingly perpetuating sexist stereotypes when we write glowing 5-star reviews that imply our gear only has to be good enough to take the dog for a stroll? The most laughably unhelpful reviews of all are those little gems where a husband writes: "Bought these boots for my wife and she loves them!" These reviews contain exactly zero useful information. What does your wife do in those boots? Forestry? Commercial fishing? Scurrying from the house to the car on a rainy morning when she's late for her office job? And why did she not review them herself?

TL;DR: I guess I can at least be grateful the boots aren't pink!

  • A bit narrow at the arches
بواسطة Norwegian Who Would في 13 March 2014

These are WONDERFUL boots; they are less expensive than the "fashion" boots (made by Sorel, which I didn't think was supposed to be a "fashion" company) I had been wearing to do rugged work around my large house/garden. The soles are not slippery, even on Portland's wet mossy concrete. I love the steel toes. I wish they were just one or two inches taller, but that's more of a statement of preference than a critique.

You will probably want soft inserts to put in these--the inside was rather bare and empty-feeling. The toe box felt nice and roomy, but the arch/mid-foot was snug--not too much for me, but it might be for some people, especially if you have wider feet. If you're not sure, order a half-size up and put in sheepskin liners and/or use Kamik polypropolene liner socks. I'm a rock-solid 7.5-8 (Euro size 39), and my feet are certainly not wide, but the insides of the boots seemed "hourglass shaped" to me, which means they were roomy in the heel and toe but snugger in the middle.

I'll check back in after a rainy spring to comment on the durability of the rubber, which was the problem with the Sorel boots--after one year of "fashion-only" use and one year of seasonal work use, the rubber split and cracked, both along the seams and wherever the boot bent or folded while I walked. I hope that doesn't happen with these.

  • Large and wide but good otherwise
    بواسطة J. في 18 March 2017

I ordered a size down (an 8) like other reviewers suggested, but I was sent a size up (a 10). It is enormous! Obviously it will have to go back. I ordered another 8, because based on the 10, I do think my regular 9 would be too large. I couldn't even wear large socks in the 10 to make it better. It also seemed very wide. The shaft is wide and accommodated my large calves easily. Otherwise it looks like a well made, sturdy boot, good for emergencies, snow shoveling, and rock hunting in areas where there might be snakes.

  • Great mud boots
بواسطة Rodney Hinton في 07 February 2014

I wear these to the barn every day they are comfortable and not too clunky even with the steel toe. They are a B width and I could use a C but not too bad. They run just a touch big but this allows for extra socks, a liner or an insole. They are warm with two pair socks and absolutely waterproof. The tread is enough for traction but not so much as to get filled with mud or muck. The tops are large enough for me to tuck in pants and my calves are 15 1/2 in. They are sturdy and look like they will last a long time. The price is the same as lesser quality boots. Not exactly fashionable but I wanted no nonsense durable work in the mud boots and these are excellent.

  • No size 9?
    بواسطة Carol P في 04 July 2014

They seem very sturdy, but the size 8 is very tight across the arch of my foot and rubs the tops of my toes. I know I'd be tripping over the toes of a size 10, yet they don't appear to even offer a size 9. (I sent a message about this to them; I have not yet received a reply. I will revisit this review if/when I do hear back from them.) If you have large calves, you should also know they may be too tight in the calf area. (Maybe a size 9 would be slightly larger?)
