  • Great boards, but check BIOS version if you have trouble
بواسطة niwrik في 09 July 2018

These are decent motherboards, though there is one thing that I ran into that is worth mentioning, assuming no-one beat me to the punch. I recently had a board that would not post, and the replacement would not post either. In each case the LED went through a few numbers and then ended on 23. The LED codes didn't seem meaningful, but I got the idea that the CPU (i7-7700K) might be newer than what the board would recognize. I purchased an i3-6300 which worked perfectly in the boards, allowing me to flash to the latest version which recognized the i7 CPU. I should mention that emergency flash procedure does not work if the board doesn't properly recognize the CPU. These boards that I received shipped with BIOS that was 2 years out of date.

  • Will not boot from thumb drive or cd/dvd on any ...
    بواسطة cb40 في 26 March 2016

Will not boot from thumb drive or cd/dvd on any of the USB3.0 ports. One of the USB 2.0 ports is completely dead. Tried to install OS from USB 2.0 port and locks up before install finishes. Tried different RAM, psw, in case, out of case, reflash bios, etc.. Just does not work. Have another on the way. I am hoping i get to upgrade this review.

    ---next day----
I got my new board and everything seems to be working. Full bench build before I put it in case this time. Ran memtest on the 64GB DDR4 set also. still having issues with boot from usb thumb drive. I did get my Centos7 installed from usb dvd though on my samsung 850 pro 512GB SSD.

My intel x520 CNA and the supermicro SAS/SATA 8 port 600MB HBA are also working well.

I still tjink there is issues with the bios. The latest they have is 1.0a so im hoping they fix the problem with the booting on thumb drives.

Other than that i am having sucess with the board. I have 4 drive wd red 3tb mirrored stripe zfs pool on the HBA. After tuning the CNA drivers i am getting great transfer speeds. 480MB from SSD in PC across wire to zfs pool. I think the bottelneck now is the speed of the SSD. My zfs pool uses available ram and so my transfers are nit getting sliwed down there. My 4 drive pool gets about 220MB on scrub. I have it cabled and ready for 4 more drives. I wanted to make sure ait all worked before a add the additional drives. I should get a transfer if 400MB after that, if not caching in RAM.

I am doing three star on this now for the bad original board and the need to be fixed bios.

    --edit
sent email to supermicro tech support again

    "So I have two questions/problems

    1. The ability to boot and install from usb.
    2. The CPU fan has no settings other than min/max, and I am unable to find a tool for linux that can do this. This is the first board in like 8 years I have had that does not let you set the speed of the fans based on temps. Am I just missing this in the BIOS?"

    --edit
I have beat the pants off of this over the last 40 hours. Seems very stable. No problems. If I never have to install my OS from a thumb drive then I'm fine.

  • Great Motherboard if you don't need SLI
بواسطة DHL في 21 November 2016

I purchased this motherboard specifically for the Z170 chipset and the controller that allows two Pcie X16 graphics cards to run in full X16 mode. Only trouble is, SuperMicro does not support NVIDIA SLI, only AMD Crossfire. Really a poor choice by SM since the vast majority of video cards and gamers run NVIDIA cards, not AMD. However, the single card solutions like the current GTX 1080 are pretty powerful, and may be all that I need since I run a single monitor at 60 Hz and 1080.

Other than the SLI issue, this board is what I wanted. Since SM is a server based supplier, they included things like a legacy PS/2 port and plenty of USB 2.0 ports, which are not supported in most modern gaming boards. These can come in handy if you have USB conflicts with older hardware like CH joysticks and throttles. I also like the first rate components and having the various heatsinks attached with metal screws, not plastic pushpins. I have used SM motherboards in other desktop computers for years, and their reliability is first rate.

Need to update this review as of 5/31/2017

The reliability I spoke about above? Gone. Just lost all my USB ports except two. No apparent reason. Was gaming last night, everything was fine. Today I powered up and no mouse or CH controllers. Yellow triangles in Device manager under USB 3.0 controllers. All ports dead; would not recognize USB memory sticks or hard wired mice. Board refuses to power down on shutdown from Windows, has to be hard shutdown from front panel on/off switch. Bios shows all voltage levels at normal, and other than USB controllers all other functions are working. But what good is a gaming board with NO usb support? Now I have to pull all the components out to RMA this POS. I have never had this kind of problem with any SM server board. The reviewers who tout this board as having server quality hardware are full of it. Supermicro should get out of the gaming board business and stick to server boards where they know what they are doing.

  • This thing is TRASH! Not worth the $40, nor subsequent hassles!
بواسطة Dan في 12 September 2018

I bought this board approximately one year and six days ago, via Micro Center... but since my experience has been SO bad, I want to make sure the rest of the public can be aware of it.

Other reviewers here have been quite scathing, and rightfully so. Having looked at the warranty terms, it does appear that even if you have a problem, if it is NOT within the first 30 days, they will charge you to ship it back to them, and repair their own defects. I will not be doing this, clearly, as the board no longer powers on six DAYS after the warranty expires.

I would not recommend this for ANYONE, not even gamers with an extremely tight budget. Every other mainstream company makes a better board that does not have even half the weird cons that this board has. I also noticed the spacing on the memory slots being off, as well as the incredibly poor M2 placement.

But hey, worked fine for a whole year to the date of purchase. Only problem now is that I have no idea whether it shorting out and refusing to power on has cost me any other components. If you are even considering this, don’t.

  • You will NOT be able to "Level UP" your Gaming Skills with the SuperMicro C7Z170-OCE-O
    بواسطة Stanley J666 في 04 August 2016

    Pros
    (1) Good choice of colors with the Lime Green and Black theme throughout the MoBo. Even the main power harness connector has the lime green color along with all of the SATA ports and the CPU & Case Fan power ports.

    (2) The design of the MoBo box has a futuristic look with the "Steel Case" look and the Model numbers in a digital font.

    (3) Everything is packaged well and everything that is needed for the build out is included in the box.

    (4) There are external buttons mounted directly on the MoBo that allow you to OC the MoBo to a variety of degrees. These are somewhat convenient so that you do not have to actually go into the BIOS to make the change. The pictures of motorcycles and jet planes are somewhat non logical however, as they do not immediately explain the degree of the OC that will result.

    (5) Having all of the main PCIe slots directly linked to the CPU and set a full x16 speed and not having to go through a bus makes the response rate super quick!

    Cons
    (1) First off this board does NOT support SLI or CrossFire. Both SuperMicro’s website and owner’s manual never mention anything regarding this subject, which to me is a deal killer as that is very important to me for gaming. I did put in a tech ticket regarding this issue and was told that they made a change and that was that. This says that SuperMicro’s support team does not really offer support! However, all the site reviews that I read on this board (and I read quite a few) said that this board DOES support SLI. I think all those review sites thought it supported SLI due to the fact that this board has a PLX (PEX8747) chip. It does NOT support SLI or CrossFire!

    (2) Secondly, and this is even a more important issue, the spacing between DIMM1 and DIMM2 is about 1/64 of an inch. Whereas the spacing between DIMMs 2-3-4 are equal and run about 1/8 of an inch. Again, I put in a tech ticket and was contacted by the SuperMicro’s support team and was told that I did NOT receive a "one off" that was the design based on the PBA and that's the way it is. Again, a pat answer and zero support! I had purchased the newest AVEXIR "Green Tesla" RAM specifically for this MoBo and it will NOT fit in the first slot. This RAM has a fat heat sink and needs space! I have already paid Newegg $300 for the 4 sticks and can only use three of them! A deal killer for me as I will not leave a DIMM empty.

    (3) Thirdly, SuperMicro has placed a dual digit error reporting visual code box conveniently on the motherboard. This is identical to the type of one that ASUS places on their boards so that if you have an issue during boot you can quickly read the code and look up what it means and then know exactly what steps to take to fix the issue. That's where the similarity ends however, as ASUS has theirs mounted directly above the DIMM slots so that once the motherboard is mounted vertically in a midsize tower with a clear Plexi window you can see it. SuperMicro on the other hand has theirs mounted at the very bottom right hand corner which puts it directly under the back of any GPU that you have mounted in the lowest x16 PCIe slot. So out of sight out of mind? Wrong! Poor planning and poor design on the part of SuperMicro. I am thinking that their lack of Gaming experience really shows in this product, as it is obvious that a non-gaming Engineer designed and built this board.

    (4) You’ll be able to use type 2260/2280/22110 M.2 modules for the slimmer SSD drives and the anchor points to accommodate the various lengths of the cards. However, the location of the connection and the anchor points are so close to the main PCIe slot for the first GPU that any larger size card with a large heat sink and multiple fans completely sits right on top of the M.2 connector. Not sure why it is located in this area as there are plenty of other areas on the MoBo that this could have been placed. Poor design again.

    (5) Fifth point is regarding the BIOS. They need to purchase an ASUS ROG MoBo and take a look at their BIOS as that is the benchmark by which all gaming BIOS setups should be. SuperMicro's is possibly adequate for a server but lacks all the features that hard core gamers look for when they are going to "Tweak" their MoBo. There are only two setting for the case fan pins "Standard" and "Full Power" when there should be settings for each fan individually.

    (6) Sixth there is no User Manual provided with the MoBo. They only ship a single sheet that is the schematic and it is printed in several languages to save as much as they can on printing costs. One last note regarding the schematic Motherboard Layout and Features page: it clearly shows that all the DIMM slots are equally spaced which is totally incorrect! Also, there is no mention anywhere on the sheet of the Error Codes and what they mean as a quick reference guide.

    (7) Seventh and lastly, the lack of USB ports. Overall, having only USB 2.0 in two slots and USB 3.0 in two slots via the I/O ports in the rear of the MoBo are now going to force everyone to go out and purchase a PCIe card with additional ports or at least a hob which will add extra baggage to something that should have been there in the first place.

    Comments:
    (1) Would I recommend this MoBo to my friends or to anyone? Absolutely not! Supermicro may be great in the Server arena but as far a Gaming ... they have to either hire a complete new team of advisors and designers or just get out of this arena.

    (2) Would I buy this product again? Absolutely not! I have already done that only to discover that all of the fine points that I look for in a gaming MoBo are missing on this one.

    (3) Is the something that I would change about this product? Yes, everything as listed above!
