  • Buy at least half a size up
By C'est La Vie on 14 July 2016

I debated forever between the size 10 and 10.5 before I finally settled on the 10.5. Out of the box the 10 felt fine (my usual size). I was able to wear socks in them just fine, and they felt comfortable enough for me to think a size 10 would be just fine. I wore both sizes around the house for a few days and kept thinking the larger size would be overkill. Then I realized you do not wear hiking boots around the house. You wear them out hiking in uneven terrain, going up and down the hill/mountain and walking on rocks, etc. So I put these shoes to the test. I went to my local REI which has simulated steep hills where you can try your boots. I noticed with my usual size 10 when I went downhill my toes started to touch the front of my shoes. Not good. I have heard stories of people losing their toenail due to this and did not want to become a statistic. Next I went to the gym and wore the boots on a treadmill that I put on a steep incline (yes, I looked weird). Again, when I wear my hiking boots I do not usually just walk on flat terrain or on carpet, so my boots need to be comfortable no matter what terrain I encounter. After an hour on the treadmill (my feet are now slightly swollen as they usually get after hiking) I noticed the 10.5 were much more comfortable. I then took both on a trail and there was no doubt. I need the 10.5.

I strongly recommend you try these boots on various terrains before you make your decision. Personally I would recommend going up at least half a size. It allows for wearing them with hiking socks and for swelling in the feet while hiking. Other than that great boots that I highly recommend. I bought mine in the dark grey color and love the bright blue soles.

While on my video you will see me wearing some light cotton socks, I recommend wearing appropriate hiking socks with these boots (I wore the white cotton socks in my video only to show socks do not get wet when shoes are submerged).

  • Love Love Love
By Amazon Customer on 31 March 2017

Love Love Love! I ordered these with high expectations and was not let down. I am an avid hiker and backpacking and kind of a gear snob but these boots really impressed me. I purchased these boots for my spring break Zion National Park trip because I wanted something lighter than my Keen boots. Not only are these boots light as a feather they are sturdy, comfortable, and WATERPROOF! I was unable to break these boots in around the house before packing them for my Zion trip, the first day I ever put them on I hiked observation peak in them (8 miles round trip with 3200ft elevation gain). In total, I did 36 miles on these boots and didn't get one blister or hot spot on my feet. My feet were always dry and cozy. The ONLY suggestion I have is for those with high arches, these boots are completely flat with no support what so ever but you can put your own inserts in them. Sizing wise they were great, pretty generous. I wear a 9-10 so I ordered a 10 and I still had a comfortable amount of room without them being sloppy.

  • Can't go wrong with these boots!
By Trixie from Florida on 12 August 2017

After doing a lot of research on hiking boots, I settled on the Ahnu Sugarpine waterproof hiking boots. I searched many sites for reviews and I read literally hundreds of reviews on these boots and ultimately there were a few simple reasons I choose these boots. So here are the top 5 reason I choose these boots:
    1. The price was reasonable. I definitely plan on using them as much as possible but I could not justify paying as much for some of the other name brands like Merrill. Based on the reviews, most wearers said these boots performed as well the other popular brands without the high price tag.

    2. Quality Vibram rubber outsole. Vibram is a trusted outsole used by many shoe brands for maximum traction and stability. Nuff said!

    3. The style of the boot was also a major factor. I wanted a hiking boot that would have style and yet still look rugged enough to keep my trail street cred in tact:). Many of the other brands are just plain ugly. I wanted a shoe that was attractive and versatile on and off the trail.

    4. Waterproof was a plus. Originally, I wanted a mesh boot because I live in a warm weather climate and thought mesh would be more comfortable. After a reading some reviews, I decided that for this trip, I would start with a waterproof boot first. This actually worked out well as I got to play in a few streams on my hike in Colorado without the worry of wet socks. I submerged my feet almost up to my ankles and my feet stayed nice and dry. I plan on buying a mesh pair as well.

    5. General comfort. Many of the reviews mentioned the sizing and which seemed to fit as expected. Some mentioned that they purchased a half size larger to accommodate thicker hiking socks. I purchase a half size larger as well and the fit was good, especially since I was wearing the thicker hiking YUEDGE Women's Antiskid Wicking Outdoor Multi Performance Hiking Cushion Socks which I purchased here on Amazon. If you need a thicker sock, the Yuedge Antiskid wicking outdoor multi performance hiking socks are great.

So these were the reason I selected Ahnu Sugarpine hiking boots. When I received the boots, I tried them on with my hiking socks immediately and they felt good. There was enough room in the toe area while wearing thick socks. I had to pull them a little more snug because I felt they were a little roomy in across the top of my foot. Even with the roominess, I was able to tie them securely and they were still comfortable and waterproof. I also read reviews that talked about the discomfort around the sides of the ankles due to the webbing on the tongue of the boot. Some complained that if the webbing was not positioned correctly when the shoe was tied it would dig into their skin after a while. I did not experience this. I also did not have to worry about positioning the tongue webbing. It went into place on its own when I tied my boots. Not to say that this could not be an issue for some, I did not experience any discomfort from this.

I would also like to mention that I did some light rock climbing at Gardens of Gods in Colorado and I must say, I found the traction on these shoes to be very good. The rocks were smooth and there were a lot of areas that were muddy from rain so I was a little concerned that I would slip on the rocks if my boots were wet or muddy. I had no issue with traction. I didn't slip at all and better still, the boots felt secure as I maneuvered over the rocks. The Vibram rubber outsole performed just as expected.

Overall, I'm really happy with the purchase of these hiking boots. I can't wait to wear them on another hike. I highly recommend them!

  • The best hiking boot by far.
    By SchultzsMom1129 on 28 January 2018

I bought these boots after reading many reviews on hiking boots. I am very limited financially, so, I read many reviews before I purchase large ticket items. I am flat footed, and though I may not climb the highest peaks or venture out on multi day backpacking trips, I am very hard on my shoes, and I put them through their paces. After reading many reviews I purchase a size 10, I am normally a size 9.5. I received these promptly through Amazon Prime, and I was pretty excited when our mail carrier dropped them off. I opened the package and the boots themselves are very well packaged, when I pulled them out of the box, I was very impressed with how light they are, I would say they are maybe a little heavier than my Asics running shoes. I put them on and I actually felt like I was wearing slippers, I love the blue color with the magenta? accents. They look very nice, I will not hesitate to wear these out about town, or out on the trail.

I live in Southern Maine, and I have two very active, very large Giant Schnauzer that I walk daily a minimum of 5 miles. We also go to the beach in the off season, hike as much as possible, and once a week we walk a 12 mile course that varies from pavement, to rocky muddy trails, old muddy logging roads, to other varied terrain.

I wore these for 3 hours out with the dogs in mushy snow, I had on a fairly thin pair of Merino Wool hiking socks, and my feet were warm, completely dry, and I felt sure footed the entire time. My dogs were glad that I was outside with them for such a long extent.

Sunday, we went to the beach, we are talking the Atlantic Ocean in Maine, in January, I am not lying when I tell you my feet were 100% dry, we were at the beach for 2 hours, and I was in the water or on the rocks almost the entire time with one of my dogs, who I do Dock Dogs with, he is pretty much a K-9 fish. My feet were not cold, nor were they wet, I was completely comfortable, the only part that got cold was the part of my legs above my boots that got wet.

These boots are comfortable, warm, waterproof, and they fit the bill of an athletic shoe which I need when I do Dock Dogs with one of my Giant Schnauzers. I am impressed, I thought I would like these boots, but, so far I am in LOVE with them, and I think Ahnu is my new boot/shoe of choice. I have included pictures of my adventures with these boots, and will update my review as time goes on.
    1. Size up half a size
    2. They are truly waterproof
    3. These are light they feel like you are wearing slippers, BUT they are very supportive
    4. I find nothing wrong with them thus far.

  • Lightweight, comfortable and ACTUALLY WATERPROOF!
By Kay on 20 December 2014

Let me start by saying this was my first hiking boot purchase, and I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. I was planning a short hike on the Appalachian Trail last year during a week that included a few possible days of rain, so i was looking for a shoe that wouldn't soak and had some traction. After reading Amazon reviews on all women's hiking boots I decided that Ahnu was the most promising brand. So I bought the Sugarpine in Honey!

I was in love with them as soon as they arrived! The color contrast is stunning and the shoe fit exactly as expected. Very comfortable and roomy, but still seemed to give support. On the trail they were fabulous. Very lightweight and molded to the foot, but also sturdy enough so that I wasn't feeling the pain of every rock. When most shoes claim to be "waterproof" I usually assume that to mean that they protect against light rain and splashed form puddles. These shoes are WATERPROOF. I walked through mud and streams that reached halfway up my boots and my socks stayed completely dry. I jumped on to a few slippery rocks when the water got too deep, and the traction was fantastic.

The second time I used them was for a tug of war event that required me to stand in a pit of mud. As predicted, they gave me excellent traction and kept my feet dry. Since the event went all day they ended up being caked in mud for about 3 hours. I went home and rinsed them with a hose and there was hardly any evidence that they had been through the mud!

I've also used them for kayaking, canoeing, and four wheeling!

Bottom line: Best shoes for rocky, muddy or wet terrain and comfortably enough for long-term hikes.
