  • Fantastic minimalist running shoe, fits a bit large
By tangent on 13 December 2016

This is an excellent racing flat for XC, and also an excellent minimalist shoe for any type of running when used without the spikes. It weighs about the same as the Merrell trail glove, compared to that shoe the Altra has more grip and better cushioning but slightly less flexibility. Like all Altra shoes it has an anatomic toe box, zero drop and great sockless feel.

I haven't used them enough to speak to durability but the upper is made mostly from a polyurethane type material with bonded mesh sections, which seems like it should prove to be more durable than the typical woven mesh upper found on many lightweight racing shoes. The only downside to this is that the upper doesn't breathe as well, which is actually quite nice right now in the winter but could be an issue if using them in the summer heat.

I hope Altra will continue to make this shoe (and other minimalist shoes without excess cushioning), as they are one of the few brands who gets the anatomic fit right in both the toe and heel areas.

I wear size 10 in Merrell, 10.5 in Saucony, 11 in Asics. Originally ordered this in 10.5 but had to return for the 10 as they were a bit too large.

  • Fun but specialized. Couldn't run in this all the time.
By Allan Buccola on 27 February 2017

Not as wide in the forefoot as the other flagship models of this brand. I typically wear a wide size in EVERY brand, but in Altra, the standard sizing works for me typically. The spike plate provides excellent protection in the forefoot from stones and roots. The spikes work great on packed dirt and clay, and SUPER well on icy roads for those 15 degree runs. I find most the the midsole foam to be a bit too firm, especially compared to Altra One, but they work well. I would not recommend trying to use these on leafy trails without the spike. The tread is simply not suitable. In a size 14, I find the lacing layout to be a bit unproductive and uncomfortable, but was able to alter the lacing, skipping the first and last set of holes, and it seemed to work just right. Fun shoe, but pretty specific application: not as universal in utility as the Superior 2.0/2.5.

  • My daughter will only wear these now.
By ByteMe on 13 May 2018

My daughter didn't like XC spikes. She didn't like the plastic spikes molded into the back. She'd wear her track spikes to XC spikes. I got her to try Altra's on at a local store. She loved them. It's the only spikes she wants now for track or XC.

They have a nice wide toe box which is ideal for the way she runs. The have some cushioning and support for spikes. They are well made.

She is on to her second pair due to how she left her first pair after her last rainy muddy XC meet of the season. She just bagged them up wet for 4 months. Parts of them fell apart due to neglect on her part. She learned her lesson and is now pampering her new pair after she runs in the rains or snow.

We got my son his first pair of spikes this spring. He tried on several pairs of spikes and he chose the Altra's. He loves them too. He said they felt more like a shoe.

  • I admit it- I basically love all things Altra
    By M. Timon on 25 June 2017

I admit it- I basically love all things Altra. Yes, I have had a few soles wear down faster than I'd like, but I've also worn the snot out of a couple of pairs, right down to flat, and they allow me to stand and walk around all day on the worst laminated concrete BS floors without the wretched back pain I get with other shoes. Also the wide toe bed can't be beat.
THESE guys, the spike running shoes, are my faves so far- I just don't put the spikes in. They are pretty minimalist but that's what my feet like. I had to get used to the arch-hugging fit, but I don't feel like it's doing my foot's job too much so it's okay. They are alo fantastic for biking, very grippy.
Wide toe beds are the jam. If you've never tried it, do.

  • Excellent lightweight trail shoe
By Manne Foster on 29 September 2018

I’ve been using this shoe as a lightweight trail running shoe to get close to the feel I liked in my Altra road racing shoes, but with a sturdier sole. After 65 miles in them including two 20 mile training runs the tread is showing a bit of wear, but they are holding up fairly well considering the rocky trails I’ve been using them on. I got them a half size bigger than by King MTs, but I might have been able to get away with my regular size.
