  • Great 1st boot
By James P. Shiloh on 02 September 2016

These are my first what I would consider real boots. I choose them because of the rating and the cost and the construction.

I work a hobby farm and put everything I own to the test.

These fit true to size. I typically don't wear socks, but have room to wear a good work sock in them.

Either my right foot is slightly bigger or the right boot is cut slightly smaller as its snug getting past the ankle portion of the boot.

I did put boot grease on them to help water proof them. It did darken the leather and hide the stitches design on the upper part of the boot.

My feet are picky and will let me know if they are uncomfortable. My feet have not complained yet and I have worn them well just over a week.

The sole is a bit hard and not aggressive enough to my liking as the ground can be a bit slick at times, but it is tolerable for sure.

The first two picks are of one boot greased and the other not. The other after a weeks wear.

    Updated: 10/2/17

Well after just over a year the sole is separating from the toe box on the left boot.

Typically I don't think this to be normal and I have an email into the company to see. However, I am extremely hard on all my stuff, including these boots, so I can not complain. They cost 100 dollars, so if they all last one year, as hard as I use them, I am good with that.

They get wet, muddy, sweaty, and beat up all the way around.

I did treat them when I purchased them and they have kept my feet dry with two treatments a couple months apart.

I just ordered my replacement pair, this time with s square toe. ;)

These have been the most comfort of all my footware I own and I am on my feet most the day.

  • Ariat Groundbreakers Size Down 1 Full Size
By Allen Eby on 01 July 2017

These Ariat Groundbreakers are very comfortable, however I did have to go through 3 sizes before finding my fit in this boot. For reference, I normally wear a 10.5 in New Balance, 10-10.5 in Asics, 9-9.5 in dress shoes (Cole Haans), 42-43 European size in Lem's barefoot shoes. I used to wear a 9.5 in Timberland work boots, they were steel-toe waterproof Titans. I've been looking to try out some Ariats, and although these are towards the economy line as Ariats go, they have not disappointed.

*nice color and quality of leather and welt
*comfortable insole although if you have high arches like I do you may want a more supportive replacement but this would be true in any western-style work boot
*non-slip electrical hazard rated outer sole, also non-marking

*not waterproof (I knew this when ordering and they breathe better, but if you're looking for waterproof this is not the model for you)
*not steel-toed (again, I knew this and was looking for soft-toe boots, but if you are working in an industrial area make sure you look for the steel-toed groundbreakers)

As for the fit, I returned 10.5 and 10 sizes for being too big before settling on 9.5. This size allowed some slipage in the heel as is necessary in a good fitting pull-on work boot. The top of the foot was a little looser than I would want at first, but as the leather has been breaking in over the last few weeks they have settled down on and around my foot and calf, and as the sole has become more flexible the heel has also settled in as well. Overall they are breaking in nicely.

I wear two types of socks for work, summer I wear thinner boot socks, and with these socks the boots are slightly looser. With Merino wool gold-toe boot socks for winter they are slightly snug. I have experienced a slight toe pinch when crouching which usually means the last is too big, so I might have been able to get away with a size 9, but I wanted to leave plenty of room for the wool socks when winter comes. If your preference is tighter boots that break and stretch to your feet you may start at a size down from street shoe size then go down another half size to get that real snug feel. For most people though, I expect 1 full size down will be a good starting point for sizing these boots.

As far as the styling, they are understated and simple which I like, and the calf is roomy for me and I have regular calf muscles, but if you are thinner than me you might find that part a little bit. I think anyone who has thick legs would fit and not find them too narrow.

Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and recommend these boots to anyone looking for a good-quality understated pull-on work boot.

  • This is the boot!! Don't waste time with other boots!!!
    By Kris W. on 06 March 2017

Love these boots! Co worker turned me on to them. I work construction 5 days a week and these are tough. I took a dead blow with the claw end of a hammer last week and the leather saved my angle bone and skin. They were very uncomfortable the first week but after that I never want to take them off. I like them better than my regular street shoes. Definitely hooked on this brand. I had Caterpillar boots before these and they almost ruined my feet. Made my toe nails curl in a bad way and feet hurt constantly plus they feel apart. These boots are already helping my toe nails form back to normal and the support is spectacular. They look good too!

  • Great price on a well made pair of boots!!
By Steven Kittelsrud on 05 November 2016

I ordered these boots as I already have a pair of Ariats and knew how the sizing would feel. When the boots arrived, I put them on and had no problems with break-in, they felt great from the start. I went hunting for three days just after they arrived and I did not regret wearing them all day long. I will be buying these again if I need more in the future! Very satisfied!!

  • Great longevity even with lots of use
By Kristen on 10 January 2018

We got this pair of boots for my husband this winter based on the exact same pair we bought for my son last winter. My son is NOT careful with clothing-type stuff and he also ran an outside painting business last summer--in other words these boots were put through the wringer (obviously not in a construction-site setting, but I'm assuming if you need boots for that that you are looking for steel toe anyway). Construction-wise they have held up phenomenally. They look a bit well used, but it just adds to the appeal for him. He wears them ALL the time and he is a college student so they have decent traction for weather and are comfortable enough for him to wear constantly.

Two points to make note of: they will stretch (my son's pair have widened visibly) and I think the color representation in the photo is off. We got brown/brown and on my husband's pair the upright part of the boot looks lighter than the picture. This is in part due to the difference in material between the two sections, but I just looked at his pair and zoomed into the picture here and I don't think the picture represents the color difference very well.
