  • I bought and used this Bower 24mm f/1.4L lens while my 16-35 f/2.8L was loaned out
    By A. Marks on 24 June 2014

This is a great lens. It's sharp. It's well built and is offered at a very reasonable price. That said, what's the word, culture shock. It is fully manual. It's been a long time since I shot that way. My 5d3 was stunned when I put it on. No AF. No AE. No clue what state the lens was in. For you Canon shooters out there, I suggest Av (aperture) mode for Live View focusing. The tiny instruction page, loosely translated from Korean, seemed to mention it. Don't panic when you discover yourself deep in "analog" world. Select Av mode, take a look at the world w Live View, adjust the fine focus ring (.62' to infinity), adjust the exposure dial (click stops from f/1.4 to f/22) and press the button. If there's sufficient light, you can shoot Av, Tv or M with the view finder. But night shooting drove me to setup the shot with Av, then dial over to M for subsequent shots. It works well. Play with it. It's fun. My student brought my 16-35 back 3 or 4 days later and I had no reason to complain. The Bower 24mm f/1.4 slowed me down enough to make me think about my shots just a little more. Go for it.

  • Excellent lens for APS-C, MFT and Full Frame
By Ryan Cipriani on 10 April 2014

NOTE: this applies to Rokinon, Vivitar, ProOptic, Bower, Samyang and other versions of this lens (developed by Samyang)

Few 24mm FF lenses have this kind of speed. Those that do usually aren't this cheap.
$500 for a good fast lens is a low price. it's surprising but it's actually quite usable wide open. I haven't had any big issues with flare, or low contrast veiling. Use the included hood.
Aperture moves well, as does focus. Smooth, no stickiness.
    Though it's F1.4, it's easy to focus with - mostly because it's a wider lens than 50mm where you'll normally see F1.4.

I'm mostly using this on a MFT (Micro Four Thirds) camera with a speed booster. With a focal reducer attached, this lens operates as a 17mm F1.0 lens, and it is useful wide open. Stopped down, even to F2 (F1.4 actual on speed booster) It's extremely bright and sharp.

This lens has replaced my usual 25mm F1.4 lens on my MFT camera. I'm liking the extra width and speed, compared to the auto focus, and size advantage the 25mm F1.4 gives me. On an APS-C sized sensor, or even MFT+Focal reducer, vignetting is minimal. It's pretty heavy on a full frame sensor, but that's normal.

  • Issues with aperture sticking...
    By J. Le on 12 October 2015

I've been using this for the past year (with my D700 and D800), and have been really impressed with the image quality from it for shooting astro photos (long exposure landscapes with the milky way in the background). The f/1.4 aperture is great for this purpose. However, lately, I have had issues with the aperture not closing down all the way, or sticking when I use an aperture other than f/1.4. This has caused exposure issues with my images. I am going to see if I can figure out if I can use the aperture ring to set the aperture manually so there isn't this variation as the aperture blades won't need to stop down for every shot.

Otherwise, it seems the lens seems well built, and image quality is good (although I have not used it much for other applications).

  • Excellent super fast lens.
By Andysea on 23 December 2016

This has quickly become my favorite milky way lens. I use it wide open with my full frame cameras and the stars are acceptable to the corners which indicates very good correction. I also don't see any chromatic aberration which is excellent. I doubt that one could find a better lens at the same price point and probably even at a much higher price point too.

  • Unbelievably Sharp!
By Amazon Customer on 17 July 2017

The lens is unbelievably sharp! Did some preliminary testing since I've read that Samyang/Rokinon/Bower lenses have had some QC issues, but it appears I've been lucky with this and another Rok lens I have. The lens is heavy and feels quality. The focus ring is smooth and there are nice clicks while changing aperture. The cap and lens hood feel a bit cheap, but I suppose they get the job done.

Can't wait to use this on my next astro outing. I'll definitely update if there's anything to report
