  • Overall it is a pretty nice collar
By Alena on 21 October 2015

Overall it is a pretty nice collar. I got it for our 16 lb Boston terrier in X-small size. It is bright red color with silky texture, looks much nicer than in the picture. All the seams are hidden or on the outside, so they can't rub/ create soars. It is also very convenient to have a quick release buckle, our previous martingale collar didn't have one because our trainer told us that they usually break, but our dog is too small to break it and his other non-martingale collar with a buckle never broke so we figured it should be fine and it is. I gave this collar 4 starts, because first of all it has a big black-and-blue company label sewn on it so it takes up most of the red ribbon (it is not visible on the product picture since it is on the farthest side). It's not a big deal, but I thought the label could be smaller not to cover nice red color. Furthermore, the sizing chart is indeed misleading. It says that X-small measures from 8-12" which I would think means circumference of dog's neck. However, it is just the length of the fabric collar, not including the chain. When you add chain, it is bigger than these measurements. Our dog's neck is 12" and you can't tighten the collar any more for him (it's on its minimum possible length). It works for us (though it's a bit loose to my taste), but probably won't work for a dog with thinner neck, because then it will be hard to get a tangible correcting tightening effect when the dog pulls. I'd say 12" is probably minimum neck size this collar will work for.

Overall, i'd like to mention that if you are planning to use this collar and want it to work right, you should consult with a trainer who will teach you how to use it properly to correct your dog and stop the pulling habit. Our dog was trained with a Martingale collar so this collar works for him. The idea is not to have it very tight and strangle your dog. In the process of training the dog learns that when he /she pulls, the chain starts to tighten and its links make clicking noises. Our trainer told us to stop after three clicks and wait until the dog makes a step back in order to get some slack. After a while the dog learns and knows the clicking noises and stops pulling when hearing them before the chain tightens further. This might be a confusing description, but my point is that the collar itself won't teach your dog not to pull:)

  • Good quality; chain leaves color on fur if it gets wet.
By Private on 05 January 2020

I have a 28lb beagle/border collie mix with a deceptively skinny 10" neck. It is really hard for me to find a collar that is the right length, but still wide enough to be effective for her. We are in the X-small category for most brands, and 99% of those only have 1/2 inch wide collars, which would end up being a garrote on my little bundle of muscle and energy with no leash manners! So, I was VERY excited to find the 3/4 in our size (her requirement) that also had quick release buckle and extra d-ring for tags (my requirements). The collar is performing well, the size is perfect to allow that little bit of 'chain noise' that helps to signal the correction behavior to the dog. After a recent roll in the mud and subsequent bath, I put the collar back on while her fur was still a bit damp and the chain did leave a gray discoloration on the white neck fur, which means that the stainless steel is tarnishing. Since I can't keep this dog away from water and mud, I will have to be mindful to just use it for training and take it off her otherwise. Overall good, sturdy construction other than that tarnishing chain.

  • Great Purchase
    By P. Graves on 15 October 2019

I wasn’t sure a Martingale collar was right for us, but boy howdy I am now! Several breeders and show dog people were touting these collars but specified they liked the metal loops. I did not want an all chain collar for my Silky Terrier. When I came across this collar I knew it was the solution I would try. Works great for us. No more uncontrolled pulling and walking is so much more pleasant. This collar is not obtrusive and I even quite like the look. Great Purchase! Thank You

  • Big and heavy
By Kristine M. Bryant on 20 August 2014

I'd been using a traditional martingale collar for my 100+-lb dog, but I really wanted something with a quick release, for safety. This collar looked promising. - after all, it's a martingale, and it's got a quick release - I'm really not all that hard to please.

However, there are a couple of problems. The collar seemed to run big, which in and of itself isn't a big problem, BUT the fabric it's made of is kind of slippy - I tighten the collar as much as it'll tighten every day, and by the next day, the adjustment has slipped, sometimes as much ans an inch.

The second "problem" I note is that the chain part is REALLY HEAVY. Now my dog is a big boy, but it still seems like an awful lot of weight to hang around his neck.

  • The "small" is big and it's only 5/8'' in width.
    By musikk021 on 30 July 2015

Sizing information and product specs are misleading!
The small collar is supposed to be 3/4'' in width. The small I received is only 5/8'' in width. I was hoping it'd be wider so it's not as cutting on my dog's neck. Also, the small collar is supposed to fit dogs with necks 10''-16''. My dog's neck measured 15'' so I figured this collar would fit when I adjust it to its max length. Actually, it fits him just fine at almost the tightest adjustment. If your dog's neck is less than 15''-16'', this small size will be too big.
Order a size down! If you're hoping to get a wide collar (at least 3/4'' in width), this is not the one for you.

Quality-wise, both the fabric and the chain part are pretty flimsy. I'm actually quite afraid the chain will not hold and might break if my dog pulls hard. Also, there's a huge "canine equipment" fabric logo stitched onto the collar, so it somewhat inhibits adjusting the size when you're trying to pull the clasp over it.

Update: Overall, not happy with this CE Technika martingale collar. Tried it on my dog for a few days and found that the material is just not sturdy enough and the collar width is too thin. Returned this and had one custom made on Etsy instead.
