  • Shoe had big wrinkle under footbed caused foot pain
    By D. Allen on 22 May 2017

I got this pair and liked it so much bot a 2nd pair in grey. Then I started getting foot pain in middle outside of feet. Pulled the footbed out and right where foot pain was great big WRINKLE on shoe bottom. I have photo not sure if could post here. So on 3 of 4 individual shoes a wrinkle big enough to cause foot pain after a mile. I am trying to get replacement but Amazon return only allows about 1/2 the text have put here already.

I just want to make sure replacement does not have footbed wrinkles. Anyone here know how to communicate with Amazon on such a matter?

Update: They sent me new pair to replace defective ones. Checked no wrinkles. Hiked them 3 miles and no foot pain and no wrinkles formed. So hope this was a matter of a factory defect and wrinkles do not form later.

  • Maybe not designed for larger sizes?
    By E. J. W. on 12 February 2018

Seems so far to be a quality product, but the fit can be uncomfortable. I ordered a size 15 in this style and while the received shoes are rugged on the outside, the comfort is lacking. The heel-cup could due with more cushion (arch support seems good), and the tongue is oddly cutting. I have large feet (15) so these accommodate length and width quite well, but maybe not "depth" so much. (which is odd, since I don't have high arches or a "thick" foot) Once I lash these down enough to feel comfortably tight across the top of my foot, the tongue of the shoe bites into the crease where the top of the foot meets the ankle. Maybe this is a stiffness of new fabric issue and it will work out eventually, but it makes the first hours of the day noticeably uncomfortable. So, build quality 5, fit 1 or 2 stars, meet in the middle at 3.

  • Not what I was hoping for, but at least acceptable for the relatively low price point
By Jeff Maziarek, author of Codi's Journey on 10 October 2017

I needed to replace some hiking shoes that were perhaps 10 years old so I bought these after reading reviews, hoping they would be at least somewhat equivalent to the old ones. After using these shoes extensively during a two month trip to visit family in Greece this summer I have to say they weren't nearly as good as their predecessors. Let's face it, 10 years ago for $50 one could buy a whole lot better quality than one can purchase today because inflation is a real thing. Columbia did their best given material cost constraints to build a shoe that is economically viable, but having used older shoes that were built with better quality for the same price a decade ago I could tell right away that the materials weren't as good in these shoes. I also didn't like what I believe are extremely long laces for this type of shoe.

With all that said, if you are looking for an affordable hiking shoe this is probably about what you'll get in terms of quality for this particular price point, meaning that it's likely those built by other shoe manufacturers probably wouldn't be any better. In my case I left these shoes at the family home in Greece and will use them the next time we go back because it makes no sense to replace them when they're only used once a year for few weeks.

  • Bigger is Better
By JP Carsten on 16 September 2017

This is a size up for me- 12 to 13. I would have preferred a 12-1/2 but not available. My toes no longer accept being cramped and the 13 meets the challenge. The lug pattern is most aggressive and will take some getting used to. They provide good support and I no longer feel pebbles through the sole as I did with cheaper footwear. Having had them for only a week I find them to meet the initial tests- Time will tell for the future.
Right now I am quite satisfied with the construction, appearance and comfort.

  • Hard to break in
By EVJake on 11 January 2019

This is a sturdy, well-made, and good-lookin' shoe with terrific grip in wet & muddy conditions, but...has anybody managed to properly break these things in yet? The collar - the part around the ankle - is stiff as a board and digs into the bottom of my ankle bone. I detect some softening after 50 or 60 kilometers, but I would never call these shoes comfortable. Another reason I had to keep my rating at three stars is the tongue is connected only at its base and tends to bunch downwards as the kilometers go by. Fortunately, the bottom of my feet and my toes are doing fine in these shoes, but my ankles are suffering, as well as the tops of my feet when the tongue begins to bunch.
