  • Tough enough for a Ranger.
    By S. Williams on 07 May 2016

I'd like to preface by saying very rarely do I take time out of my day to write reviews, but if I feel strongly enough about a product then I'll share my thoughts.

I've had these boots for over 2 months now and wear them all day on a daily basis. My job as an LE Ranger for the NPS requires me to put my gear through vigorous use during each shift. Contrary to popular thought, I'm not out hiking all day. I'm jumping in and out of rigs, I'm sprinting, I'm crawling, I'm carrying heavy loads, I'm stepping in and over just about everything you can imagine and yes, I go for the occasional hike. These boots handle it all and then some!

    FIT/SIZING:
Before buying, I did a lot of research and I've also tried on a pair of Danner Bull Runs in the past which made me familiar with how narrow they run. I made my decision between these and the Mountain Light iis, which many of my coworkers wear. However, the thing that sealed the deal for me is the Explorers are an inch taller and I figured that might mean avoiding the dreaded Achilles issues Mountain Lights are notorious for. I'm happy to say I've had 0 Achilles issues with these boots. The explorers also weigh slightly less than the Mountain Lights, I'm guessing due to construction, but I really haven't found them to be "heavy." No they are not as light as your tennis shoes, but they don't feel like Dumbbells strapped to your ankles either. If anything, they feel sturdy and that's exactly how I want my boots to feel for this price.
If you've made it this far, listen closely because here is the major trick with these boots; if you have even a moderately wide foot BUY EE, if you have a majorly wide foot, I'd definitely try these on in person before buying. I have never in my life needed wide sized shoes in any brand or any style, but Danner sizes their hikers small for stability purposes, which you can read directly on their website. As for length, I find them to be true in size for a hiker. You're supposed to have a little room near the toes for downhill portions of trails. I usually wear them with wool socks and have never had any issues regarding fit.

    BREAK IN PERIOD:
Virtually non existent. The leather was very supple and of the highest quality. I played with the laces a little bit because if you pull them too tight you'll get some pressure points, but once the leather starts molding to your foot you can tighten them up a bit more. Again, I've heard the Moutain Light iis have a bit of a break in period compared to these. I'm not sure if that's due to different construction materials or what, but I've had worse break ins with dress boots if you can believe that.

    QUALITY:
In a market flooded by brands selling out their work to overseas factories (I'm looking at you Vasque), the quality of these boots is unmatched. It appears Danner may have also solved the fiberglass shank issues as none of the more recent reviews mention it. So far no issues for me either and my boots have a manufacture date of Dec. 2014, which is after most of the shank issue reviews.

    OVERALL:
They look like your grandfathers boots. They look rough and ready, which is exactly what they are. I'm happy to know that for a fraction of the original cost I'll be able to mail these boots off to Danner to get resoled when they finally break down on me, but I'm not expecting that to happen for many years to come. These boots have quickly become my favorite part of my uniform and something just feels good about wearing boots made in the USA. I'll do my best to give an update down the road, but so far, 2 major thumbs up!

    —————- UPDATE ———————
Over a year and a half later of wearing these boots 4-5 times a week for 8-10 hours per day and they are still going strong. No blown stitches, Vibram outtersole is holding up, no broken fiberglass shanks, leather is still supple (with regular care), even the laces are still just fine. These boots have seen dirty/muddy trails, sandy beaches, asphalt, saltwater, rivers and everything in between and they are still awesome! Danner has a customer for life.

  • Danner Explorer vs Mountain Lights & Lights 2
By Amazon Customer on 29 June 2017

I read the reviews and normally wear 11.5D went with 11EE and they fit perfect. I am in the land sales business so I needed a boot that is tough but comfortable. We may go from running equipment to mapping a 200 acre property and I needed a boot that is able to do it all. So far this is the one! I have had them for a couple of months and have put several miles on them. First time out was on a wet, muddy 124 acre tract where we walked about 5 miles through creek bottoms and muddy access roads. Not only was I very pleased with the traction, but my feet stayed dry all day. Even though that was a rough trip for new boots, they were very comfortable and it went a long way to breaking them in. After 2 months I look forward to putting them on and seeing where they take me. That may sound crazy to some folks, but to those that have been fortunate to find that pair of boots....you know what I am talking about. If you are torn between the Mountain Lights & Lights 2 I tried them both and they do not hold a candle to the Explorer. The water proof liner in the Explorer is much higher and the traditional tongue is more comfortable than the fold over on the Lights. That's my 2 cents.....hope it helps.

  • American made out of Portland, Oregon. Sold for life.
By Michael Thomas Cantwell on 19 September 2017

These Danners are simply put - the finest boots I've ever worn. A bit difficult to break-in, as all well-made boots typically are, the Explorers are made from adequately thick leather stitched onto a thick lugged Vibram sole and secured with a toe-to-ankle brass eyelets and quick hooks with quality laces. For the cost, they aught to be.

I've also use a pair of Danner Patrols, which are comfortable boots as well. Both are fully lined with Gore-Tex and incredibly enough, they do keep my feet dry and comfortable. Stability is greatly improved on the trails or on the street and uneven terrain is no problem. One thought to keep in mind; these boots are made on rather narrow lasts. Getting a wider size then you'd normally wear is important. e.g. normal size for me is 11.5 E, these fit better EE.

When these are done, I'll get more. If you haven't invested your hard-earned cash on a pair of Danners, make the move. Think of what you spend on quality tires and how long they last. These boots will last for years and your feet will love you for it.

  • A whole different level of boot.
By Mike on 03 December 2017

This is an incredibly high-quality boot. I have never had something like this before. I have only had these Explorers for a couple months, but you can tell they will last for a very long time. The leather gets more comfortable as time goes on, but stays very strong. The vibram sole is solid and grippy. The leather provides a first level of waterproofing and the gore-Tex ensures your feet stay dry.

Every 2 years (on average) I have been replacing my hiking boots. I usually spend $120-$150 on a new pair of waterproof boots. I use them for hiking and general work around my property. A couple friends, who work on their feet all day, recommend Danners. It is early, but I completely understand the difference. This is a whole different level of boot. There are no seams or cloth that can break down. Every piece is thick leather and all seams are double-stitched. I would be blown away if these didn't last me 5 years+.

  • Fantastic Boots!
By Slympicins on 05 December 2018

I have been wearing Danner boots since the early 90's for work (Acadia). About 7 years ago I bought a pair of Recons. No matter how many pairs of Danner boots, I'm always an 11.5 D. There is no difference in size from pair to pair. I recenyl went to a boot dealer who sold numerous Danner boots. Every different pair of 11.5's for the same.
I have resoled my boots several times and they still fir great. So I wanted a nice pair of boots for treking rather than working. These arrived and they for exactly as do my other Danner's. Picked up some Brown Danner boot dressing and lathered them up. Great for break in and some additional water proofing. If you ever considered Danner boots and didn't get them because of the price, go back and get them. You will own these boots longer than any other boot you have had. There could not be a better boot out there than Danner.
