  • American made
By Edward Cary on 17 October 2017

This is my 3rd pair of Danners that I have had. These boots are meant to last. My last pair lasted about 7 years before the stitching on the leather started to come undone. The boots are little tight the first week, but get broken in fairly quick. The gor-tex lining make the boot really comfortable, and warm. The only draw back is that the boots are a little heavy, but it's s solid American boot. One of the best things, the boot can be resolved.

  • Review from a guy whose had foot issues
    By UsedToLoveH.E.R. on 06 July 2015

In an attempt to improve the quality of this review, I'd like to preface it with a little about who I am as a consumer and what I am looking for. This is my first all-leather "duty boot" (I have owned all-leather Timberland PROs before) and prior to this, I've mainly worn very comfortable New Balance shoes and a pair of Under Armour boots which are primarily nylon/synthetic and are EXTREMELY lightweight and breathable. I've also worn a pair of Magnum Steel toe boots which I found to be extremely uncomfortable as well as a pair of Bates Durashocks that didn't do it for me either. In short, I am not a leather boot guru and in fact, this is my first pair of this type of boot. I am using these boots professionally, which means I am using them 9+ hours per day and 3-5 days per week. One last thing you should know about me is that I've had A LOT of foot problems in the past... From ingrown nails to plantar fasciitis, I've experienced some painful feet more than a few times. That said, footwear is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to me. I'd rather spend $500 on shoes than be in pain and in and out of the doctor's office over and over again.

First of all, I tried out a pair of Bates Defenders Durashocks which look very similar to this boot, although the Bates boots have nylon on them. The first pair of Defenders I tried were too big. I downsized a half size and then the left boot cramped and smashed my left toes too much. The Defenders were about a third the price of these, but I soon realized, you get what you pay for.

I kept hearing people rant and rave about these boots (except the price tag of course) and I decided to shell out the big bucks and get a pair. After I put these suckers on, I IMMEDIATELY noticed a HUGE difference from the Defenders. The Recons are definitely comfortable out of the box and they fit my feet great... no toe cramping and smashing.... HOWEVER, do note that I purchased the extra wide boots even though I would not always wear an extra-wide... I saw other customer reviews which said that these boots run narrow.

That said, these boots are indeed FULL LEATHER BOOTs, so if you're looking for the lightweight feel of nylon or other synthetic footwear, look elsewhere. These are the real deal - heavy, durable, clunky full-size leather boots which come with both pros and cons. The pros are that these boots offer GREAT protection from the elements and terrain. The con is that the boots are heavier and require a break-in period that lighter, more breathable synthetic footwear does not. However, synthetic footwear often does not last that long and isn't always weatherproof or as protective from the elements as these Recons are.

To summarize the above, these boots do what they are supposed to do FANTASTICALLY, but don't get them thinking they will be as comfortable as your favorite pair of New Balance tennis shoes because they won't.... They will be as comfortable as LEATHER BOOTs can be.

I am very impressed with these boots. I've worn them for a couple of weeks now and let me mention that after the first few hours of wearing them, my feet were tapped out - they were not broken in yet and I wore them for 6 hours straight walking heavily... At first I thought they just needed to be broken in still - and I was partially right.... But the main reason my feet hurt was those "Air thotics" that they come with. Those are my only gripe - as far as I'm concerned, they're garbage. This is coming from a guy whose feet need strong arch support. The good news is this was a very easy fix, I just went to Wal-Mart and purchased Dr. Scholl's arch supports for like 10 bucks and the problem was solved. With the arch supports inside, these are some of the most comfortable boots I've ever worn and DEFINITELY the most comfortable leather boots.

This is all I will write for now as I've still only owned these for less than a month. I'll have to make some additions after I've put some serious wear on these bad boys so see how they hold out. One thing I will say too is that they can definitely be polished and shined up relatively well and they are DEFINITELY weather proof.

  • these are the best boots I have worn straight from the box
    By Grizzly06 on 23 August 2016

I am a 12 year veteran of the Infantry, and now in law enforcement, these are the best boots I have worn straight from the box. Danner has the softest leather that did not require a lengthy break in period. My first pair of Danners, and a firm believer!

  • Still the best boot
By Amazon Customer on 25 December 2017

These are the real deal. Was weary after reading reviews from people who said if they believe they have been sold pair of knock-off boots. Repair I received were just like the other three pairs I've purchased over the last 25 years. Or these his duty boots during my law enforcement career. Had tried others as a rookie and found them lacking. The Danner Recon get my feet dry over the years. I had each pair I purchased prior resold at least two times. The only reason I ever replaced any while still working is because I wanted a new pair.

I ordered the same size that I ordered in 1989. They fit exactly as I expected them to. I read reviews that complained about the soles being warped and the shoes being difficult to tie. I think it was because the reviewers didn't realize that they are a brand new pair of shoes and that they are stiff as hell fresh out of the box. It will probably take me a couple of days of walking in them too iron them out but after having only worn them for a half an hour I feel like they will be just like the prior boots. So far I'm very happy with the purchase and price I paid on Amazon today who's the best price I've seen in years. If you wore them before and you want another pair, this is probably the best place to get them. If things don't go as planned I'll update my review.

  • Painful break in, but look great!
By None Yo Business on 29 February 2016

Great quality boot. Gonna take a long time to wear these babies in however. Wore them for three days straight and have two sores on each leg in the same places. One sore where the tongue bunches up and one at the top front of the boot. My feet feel a bit bruised on the bottom and toes hurt. Some people posted that these are comfortable from the get go... maybe they are diabetics and can't feel their feet to begin with?
These boots look great and are very well built, but prepare yourself for a painful break in period.
I'm used to Dr. Martens both British and Asian made boots. These are at least as painful as those are to break in if not more. I'm glad I ordered the EE size. I don't believe anyone with all 10 toes could wear these boots at the regular width. My feet are a bit narrow to begin.
I got the 13s and they fit just about perfect. I normally wear 13 - 14 in American made footwear... 12 - 13 in British sizes.
Don't get me wrong...I'm going to keep fighting these beasts until they do my bidding.
