  • Nice boots, with a couple of caveats
By Shoehound on 28 September 2016

Nice boots and soft leather. I wear between a 7 1/2 and 8 and I bought the 7 1/2. They fit really well, though with thick socks they might be a bit snug. I like the look of these boots and overall my review is positive, with two caveats. First, as others have mentioned, the zipper is really hard to budge. In fact on one of the boots I broke out into a sweat trying to get it zipped up. 2nd the shaft is not smooth as I was expecting. There are some folds and areas where the leather doesn't really lay that flat. Still, I am hoping that both of these issues will resolve themselves once the boots are more broken in. I have a 13" calf and it is almost impossible to find a boot these days that does not leave a gaping void between the shaft and my leg. These boots fit the bill so I'm going to keep them . It was a really good price for Frye boots (which these definitely are). They are attractive and I think they should wear well as long as the zipper cooperates.

  • Fantastic boot, but choose color wisely
By Louella on 13 January 2015

I bought the Phillip Harness Tall in the burnt red vintage leather and fell in love with Frye boots...so much so that I bought the same boot in the grey soft vintage leather. It may have just been the pair I got, but the leather was more of a putty color than the variation of grey, tan, or taupe that I expected. I had to take off one star for the color, but I love the comfort, quality, and fit of the boots so much that I returned the grey and got the camel color instead. Love, love, love! I ended up absolutely loving the camel color...it's a warm, deep golden shade that will go with pretty much anything and earns the full 5 stars. Pictures posted are of the camel color.

Some additional info: The regular Phillip Harness Tall Boot fits my 13" calf circumference perfectly with room to fit one finger between my leg and the boot, and it stops about 1-1/2" below my knee (I'm 5'3" and 120 lbs). If you need a wider calf circumference, be sure to order the "wide calf" version of the same boot. I tried both the soft vintage leather and the antique leather versions of Phillip Harness Tall. The soft vintage leather is just that--soft, luxurious, beautiful color, comfortable! I found the antique leather to be much stiffer than the soft vintage and still beautiful, but the stiffer leather rubbed at my ankle bones on both feet when I walked--not comfortable with no foreseeable break-in success, so that pair was returned. Overall, I am THRILLED with my new boots...they are definitely worth the money. My only regret is that I didn't discover Frye boots sooner!

By Hope Hunt on 21 November 2016

These boots are wonderful. The leather is soft and molds to your foot with no break in needed. The upper part seems to stretch and mold to your leg. I didn't realize I have what FRYE calls a wide calf - but apparently I do. If you measure 15 - 17" in the calf - you do too. The regular size in this style is for 14" calves and under. Don't be freaked out, buy boots that fit. My calves are 15.5 and I can wear these with jeans just fine, right out of the box. They feel snug and comfortable, but not tight. My toes are not tight in the roomy toe box either. I normally wear and 8.5 - so as advised by Frye and others I sized up to a 9. They are great. I wore normal thickness boot socks with them - but I might be able to wear thicker ones if I had to. I live at the beach - so that probably will never necessary! They didn't make my feet feel overheated however when I just had to wear them around the house and on a warmer day. The zipper in the back works much better for me than and side zipper or a pull on style. I have had side or ankle zipper boots before and once they break in the zipper bends at the ankle and is painful. With the back zipper it seems to not hit a painful place even if it does bend a little with time. It just bends in that hollow place above the heel and you don't feel it at all. The harness ring and style keeps the boot smooth over your ankle. This is a quality item and I feel like they will last a long time.

I had wanted Frye boots for quite some time, but hated paying the price for them. I have wide/athletic calves and was afraid these boots would be too tight around my calves. Plus, I have a wide foot across the ball of my foot, so I have problems with some shoes hurting my feet. But, I tried them on at a major department store to be sure of the size and to see if I thought they were worth the money. I usually wear an 8 1/2 or a 9 depending on the brand, And the 9 was a little snug, so I opted to order the 9 1/2. Well, needless to say, I loved these boots, but the dept. store didn't have my size in the cognac color. So, I ordered them from Amazon. The boots arrived quickly, thanks to prime shipping. The zipper is stiff, but it takes a heavy zipper for this much leather. I was afraid the back zipper would rub my heel, but I haven't had any problem with that. The leather is soft and supple, beautiful color and feel. These boots fit like a glove. I wore them for about 8 hours the first day, and my feet never hurt at all. These boots haven't required a "breaking in period". I've only had my boots about a month, but I wear them frequently, and they look great with skinny jeans, dresses and skirts. These may be y first pair of Frye boots, but they won't be my last.

These are a beautiful boot and run true to size. Like most Frye cuts, the extended calf is not nearly as wide as other brands. I own the PhillipRiding boot and Paige boot--both of which fit. I purchased the extended calf in the Phillip Harness boots, but sadly these were too tight at the very top for me to fit most jeans and socks into them comfortably. The cognac leather is a beautiful carmel color with some slight variation. The zipper is a brassy-tone and runs the full length of the boot, making them easier to get on/off, however I personally found the full back zip to be a bit awkward especially when putting my foot into the boot.
