  • Perfect shoes with a fixed lifespan
By Sic Semper Tyrannis on 07 March 2019

Just purchased my third pair of Keen Austins in brown.
    Pros:
-Toebox that won't give you bunions, but in a non-minimalist shoe.
-Lots of lace holes, which means you can tighten them up adequately across your arch
    -Heel does not slip
-The toe-wrap sole, common to most Keen shoes, keeps them looking great for much longer than other shoes.
-Look good enough to wear with slacks in informal but dressier situations (work, church, etc), but still work with jeans at a bar
-Not at all sure how, but they never seem to get too hot, not even in the summer
-Also don't seem to get overly cold in the winter
-They totally work for up to moderate hiking (anything that doesn't require ankle support, really)
-If I had to, I could even jog in them

    Cons:
There are only three cons. The first I can totally overlook, and I'm only bringing it up because I just got my third pair yesterday: they take FOR FREAKING EVER to break in. Like two weeks! I forget about this because they're so perfect afterward but I'm currently walking around like Frankenstein.

The second is that this model does change slightly over time. You can clearly see that accenting leather was used for the lace reinforce on my shoes: this is new. My last two pairs had identical leather all through the uppers.
The more aggravating change was that my first pair of Austins did not have padding around the opening: it was just two layers of leather stitched. I'm sure they think it's more comfortable this way but I also believe this is part of the break-in problem, and it also affects how they look.

The most important con, the thing I REALLY wish they'd address (but they never will) is that they are a time bomb. It seems like I get 1.5-3 years of perfect use out of them, and then they just start disintegrating. The laces break, the sole delaminates, the upper comes unglued from the sole, stitches start to break, and it all happens within a month or two. I do understand that this is what you can expect from mass produced goods from India (and Keen is definitely on the top of that heap) and I do understand it's in Keen's interest to engineer them to a specific lifespan, but I would be willing to spend $50 more for shoes that would last another two years.

  • A Go to Shoe for the work place or just being casual
By Seasalem on 11 March 2017

This is my second pair of Austin Keen's (I've owned 5 pairs of diffrent styles) and I came back to this model because it gets the job done. I work on my feet all day for work. This shoe is sturdy and seems to keep my body from breaking down from the foundation. The only major caveat I will give the rookie Keen wearer is they take a long time to break in compared to a sneaker like Nike, or Adidas. Once they are broken in though, wow they last and seem to keep my feet from aching. Running Shoes only last me 6 months, these shoes about a year if not longer. The rubberized toe is a huge help with work just moving boxes and junk around without getting hurt. Also the shoe is a bit more classy/professional that the sneaker. So a win win. Ultimately this is a great value for something that will help your health in the long run to avoid hurting feet to the aching back and down the line.

  • Comfort and Quality
By CSNYguy on 03 June 2016

Let me begin by saying this is the fifth pair of KEEN's I have purchased. I have the Austin Shoe in black as well. In all honesty, I can not remember how many years ago I purchased them. I knew what size to order because their sizing is very consistent. Keen are the most comfortable shoes (and work boots) I've worn. They're made with extra room across the toe area so I don't need to buy a wide size. I marked that I could wear them comfortably only for a couple hours. That's a bit misleading, because I have diabetic myopathy, and wearing the shoes a "couple hours" is actually incredible! Anything else I can't last very long without foot pain. To me, it all boils down to comfort and quality. My Doctor told me that when you try on new shoes, and they're not completely comfortable from the beginning, don't buy them! They aren't going to stretch, you're not going to grow into them, you shouldn't need to break them in, they should feel like you could wear them all day long when you first try them. KEEN shoes fit that way for me. They Rock!

  • Great comfortable and supportive shoes
    By simon D on 18 December 2017

This is my third KEEN shoes upon arrival the top of the box was torn, but no big deal to me, however the big deal was that the shoes must have been worn extensively and long enough to cause cresses on the sides of the shoes where toes bend during walking (it must have been on carpeted areas as the bottom looks ok). The size and feeling (accurate fit, comfort and support) is just great. I tried to return and exchange the for the same shoes but the price had gone up. I waited a week or so to post this in case the price went down again but it did not.
I will leave new feedback if the seller offers a remedy.

  • Expected Better
    By Mark S. on 25 March 2018

These shoes were made in India. Unlike other Keen leather shoes I own, the Austin did not break in quickly. I usually break leather shoes in by wearing them around the house for a few hours, then good to go for normal wear. These took several weeks of wearing them to work two or three times a week. The tongue in the right shoe hurt my foot (never had this problem before). That may have been due to the fact that the edge of the tongue lined up with the eyes the laces go through and caused pain when I cinched the laces up to tie the shoe. The shoe was too loose of it was not cinched up. The left shoe did not have this problem. The leather looks and feels very cheap and substandard for what I have come to expect from Keen. The shoes fit as expected. The have finally broken in and are fairly comfortable but not as comfortable as my Portsmouth or Anchorage III.
