  • Love this yarn
By bezoarrn on 21 September 2014

Vanna's Choice and Vanna's Choice Baby from Lion Brand are my favorite yarns to use for all my projects. Period. They are premium acrylic yarns in worsted weight. They are the softest acrylic yarns that I have found anywhere near this price point. Most acrylic yarns I've used are scratchy and have tremendous drag when knitting or crocheting. Not this yarn. It is soft, smooth, and the hooks or needles glide right through it. I can't stand "cardboard" yarn.

I had been ordering it from the Lion Brand website because the local craft and fabric stores carry a limited variety and quantity. I had no idea Amazon carried it. Many of the colors are much cheaper on Amazon and have Prime shipping. Some are twice as much or are an add on item. Whether you get it here or elsewhere on line, be warned that the colors don't always match. Sometimes they are darker, like the Colonial Blue, sometimes it's brighter like the very vibrant aqua, and sometimes it's a different tone all together, like the Sapphire Blue which actually has a dark almost real undertone. It's a chance you take when buying from a photo anywhere on the internet. This green is a perfect match in person.

While it's easier to buy everything from the website, you can save some serious money buying on Amazon if you take your time to compare prices on the different colors. However, there is a serious trade off. You don't get all the same lot number. That's not a big deal if your using multiple colors interchangeably on a project, but it is if you are making a solid colored item.

My experience even with the same lot numbers is that there are some quality control issues. The colors match fine but sometimes one skein is a tad bit shinier than the next, and the texture of the yarn can be different from one skein to the next, or even within the same skein! It's rare but it does happen. They will be the same ply but the yarn itself gets much thinner. Again, it depends on your project if this will be an issue.

All I can say is if you are buying it directly from Amazon and not one of the market place sellers and you notice this problem, you can return it. I think the savings is worth it for the projects I make such as multicolored afghans, blankets, slouchy hats, market bags, yarn bags, etc. it is just so soft!

  • Playdo
By HODGEPODGESPV on 05 January 2019

I bought this to teach a friend how to crochet. We started with the essential chaining until she was really comfortable and consistent. I don’t know how many times she chained and ripped but she got it finally before she ripped the chains out so she could progress to learning stitches which she had to rip back sometimes for consistency and correction of oopsies. ;)

That yarn got a hardy workout what with learning gauge and practing bit of patterns and held up well.

The only thing I disliked was the fuzziness. I thought it was smooth yarn which was probably my not reading the description well enough which caused the snippers to come out to cut between the fuzz or the yarn itself.

We had fun learning and playing and laughing without worrying about expense! And when I don’t need it for playdo, I think I’ll have enough for the odd granny square or a row within one! ;)

  • Pretty, Needs to be Softer
By MissSanguinity on 20 January 2015

I found that the yarn was a little rough for my taste. It was alright, but it wasn't "silky-soft." But that's an easily solvable problem.
For any yarn that is a little scratchier than I prefer, it's fixable by take off labels, loosening the skein up with your fingers, but just a little, sticking in a mesh bag, wash with cold water, and and drying with medium heat. Out of the dryer, the skein is usually much fluffier and softer.
But other than that, the yarn is quite nice. The color is lovely, the yarn is very sturdy and strong, the thickness is excellent for scarves and sweaters, and the skien produced very warm items.

  • generic fleshtones light for doll crocheting
By BitTwiddler on 30 March 2019

Looking for a proper pale creamy pink for crocheting dolls and this is about the best shade I've found in a non-cotton non-obscure-imported-brand. I need #4 worsted weight not a lighter thinner yarn as most of my stock/supply/hoard is #4 worsted weight. This has worked for a good pale pink flesh for faces and hands. (I had an easier time finding other shades for other tones). This is slightly thinner than my normal brand, but overall works up well.

  • Dark Navy Vanna's Choice Lion Brand
By Crissi (Fraz Zled Momma to Many) on 04 June 2016

I will be the first to admit that I am a yarn snob. I love natural fibers, hand-dyed by indie artisan dyers. Yes, I know, but there is nothing finer!! So, keep that in mind here.

Overall, I do NOT like working with this yarn. It splits too easily and I've had to redo stitches multiple times on a row because I've managed to only snag one or two of the threads, not the whole twist. I do knit and crochet tightly, so that does not help. I do like the way the stitches look on the finished product. There is good definition and a slight sheen. It also has more spring to the fiber, which means less hand fatigue, which was an unexpected surprise, as other cheaper yarns have killed my hands.

I bought this for a very specific Lion Brand project I was crocheting for a friend, or I would probably have not purchased it at all. This is a DARK, deep navy blue, even darker than the picture on my monitor. Great for this project, but tough on my old eyes. I can't be the only one who has a hard time seeing stitches on the dark yarns, right?
