  • I'd like to say that after reading all the negative reviews ...
    By BJS_K12TG on 28 October 2017

I'm writing this review to provide current information to prospective buyers. For what it's worth, I have more than 25 years of high-end hardware integration experience.

First, I'd like to say that after reading all the negative reviews I was terrified to purchase this motherboard. I had a request to spec and build 10 custom CAD systems for a global manufacturer of robots used in production. I've used MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte for CAD systems at all levels of complexity and sophistication.

In mid-Sept 2017, ASUS released an updated X299 BIOS after working closely with Intel engineers to correct a number of X299 chipset related microcode issues. I spent several hours researching reviews of ASUS X299 stability after the BIOS update and I was 85% confident the reported bugs had been resolved. The prototype system was the first of a $50,000.00 custom built CAD order.

My exact specifications were as follows:
    CoolerMaster HAF932 Case
    Corsair HX1000i Power Supply
    ASUS X299 Prime
    Intel 7820X Processor
    CoolerMaster 240 Sealed Radiator
    4X16GB Ballistix DDR4 2400
    2X Samsung EVO850 SSD RAID 1 Mirror
    WD 3TB Red SATA HDD
    PNY Nvidia M4000 GPU
    ASUS DVD

The prototype using the ASUS X299 motherboard with the Sept 2017 BIOS update applied was 100% stable. The system config listed above was designed to run Solidworks 2018 and ACAD Inventor 2018 on WIndows 10 Pro 10+ hours per day 6 days per week. The prototype passed a 72-hour stress test without a hiccup and two weeks of real-world production. Nine additional systems were configured using identical specifications and all have performed perfectly.

I'm not a review writer, but I do run a business and I've seen how hard bad reviews can be on sales. My firsthand experience with the ASUS X299 motherboard configuration above has been exceptional and I personally believe ASUS may have been a bit bruised by X299 chipset issues beyond their control. Regardless, I can say with 100% honesty, my experience with this build could not have been better. Initially, there was more than a little bit of hesitation placing this order.

Taken in context, by a person that has built literally thousands of systems, ASUS worked to protect their reputation for quality working closely with Intel to resolve X299 stability issues.

If you update the BIOS you can buy with absolute confidence. It's a great motherboard.

    100 day update - February 16th, 2018.

After just over three months of operation, 90% of which is high-end design work, the 10 systems above continue to perform without any issues. All systems are dual monitor deployments. Zero BSD occurrances, system lockups, random reboots or performance concerns exist.

The only advice I can offer buyers reporting problems is to stick with top quality components (especially RAM and video) when configuring systems capable of this level of performance.

  • Issues starting to get accumulate just 4 months in.
By Jonathan on 07 January 2018

Alright so I got this motherboard (ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING) in late september along side an i7-7820x to use for work and it was great at first but it is now 4 months later and my rear audio port is dead, my ethernet port works at a greatly reduced speed. I invested in this hoping it would last for a few years but these issues are starting to accumulate. I contacted asus support to see if I can get help for this and I would have to send it in which is normal of course but they would charge me to send me a new motherboard until they get the faulty one back. Also understandable but I think I should only get charged if they don't receive the faulty motherboard within a certain period of time, and not in advanced.

I think for now my best bet would be to get a sound card because at this time I can't really dish out the cash to pay them for the motherboard again I just hate that this motherboard is starting to have more and more issues as time passes. I would suggest going with another manufacturer.

  • Thank god I purchased through Amazon so I can return this frustration device!
By Bryan Reynolds on 21 September 2017

Like a lot of you, I have had problems. In my case it's not just the hardware but the customer service.

Bottom line, they have a q-code system that will tell you what is wrong when you apply power. The motherboard I purchased and recieved showed only ever code "00". I tried everything. Nothing ever but "00" and no beeps.

Talking with customer service they say the qcodes don't work all the time. LOL.

I tried new memory, cpu, video cards, the whole lot. Nothing. Thank god I purchased through Amazon so I can return this frustration device.

I am sure customer service will reply to this. This is too you, "Please think about the time and effort your customer put into this!"

  • First board a dud, replacement worked. Works on Linux
By Robert M. DeLuca on 02 January 2018

The first board that arrived was a dud. It would only POST if the heatsink (a Noctua NH-D15) was not clamped down. Every time I would tighten down the heatsink the indicator lights on the motherboard would not light up and the diagnostic LED code would remain at 00. The one time I got it to POST with the heatsink partially tightened only some of the RAM would work. I suspect broken or bad traces.

The replacement board works fine, but I'm too afraid to try the NH-D15 again (this thing is massive), so I'm currently using an NH-L12S. It works fine with my 7820X because I don't overclock.

The reason I chose the X299 platform is because I was looking for more cores to throw at software compilation, and the new Xeon W2145 is outrageously expensive right now. This is the first prosumer setup I've used for programming in over a decade, but so far I'm pleased - compilation times have dropped over 50% from the 4-core Broadwell Xeon machine it replaced.

This is the setup that installed just fine without tweaking. I installed using a desktop Ubuntu 16.04.3 image from a USB flash drive:

    CPU: i7-7820X
    GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060
MB: (this motherboard that came w/ BIOS version 503)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX in quad channel configuration @ 3000MHz (CMK32GX4M4C3000C15)
SSD: Intel Optane SSD 900P 480GB AIC

By Skylar on 21 October 2017

Motherboard just gave me endless issues from day 1. Couldn't handle 64GB of RAM without BSOD, constant crashes in Windows 10, driver issues, network speed was about 1% of what it should've been. Returned.
