  • Great pan
By Not Quite Crunchy Mommy on 26 July 2013

Really can't complain at all about this, it's a quality cake pan for sure. The only thing I would recommend is to make sure you spend a *lot* of time getting all of the air bubbles out. The first cake was done well before the party as a test, and we discovered a couple things -

    1. Air bubbles. Lots of them. If you don't get all the air bubbles out you will lose most of the detail on the top of the ship. It will barely look like a ship. The second time we used it we made sure to spend plenty of time just getting the air bubbles out (easiest way is just to keep dropping it onto the counter). It came out great the second time. Not perfect, but great in my opinion. Next time I will probably spend even more time making sure the bubbles are out. There is a lot of detail, so it's tricky but so worth it.

    2. If you plan on using box cake mix (which we did the first time just to save time) know that this cake pan will need more than one box in order to fill it. Probably should have realized that before, but whatever... like I said, the first time was a test. When we made it for my kid's birthday party we made sure we had plenty of mix in there so it filled the whole pan. I personally haven't done many cakes with these types of pans, and incorrectly assumed that one box would be sufficient. I know better for next time!

Overall quality was great, but to make sure you're getting the most out of this I highly recommend getting the proper decorating tips and such. We also used a pretzel rod for a mast, it looked awesome when it was all done.

  • Easy release, great details
By Amazon Customer on 22 April 2011

With Nordic you know what you're getting - even heating, easy release (if you follow pan directions) and made to out last the original owner! Any difficulty with the pan can only be user error.

    Chef tip:

Any character pan or highly detailed pan requires a cake with a tighter crumb structure (is more firm) than the standard yellow cake boxed mix.

If you can't manage to bake from scratch then choose a pound cake or bundt cake mix. When I teach or Demo at Williams-Sonoma, using their pans, appliances etc. I often have to use their mixes to demo pans etc. Any of their bundt cake mixes will work in the fancy Nordic pans.

    Gluten-Free Baking tips:

In my kitchen and in my business, I maintain a strict Gluten-Free environment. I converted the recipe on the back of the package and found it made a bit more than needed to fill the cavities. The recipe is easy to convert since it already has a higher protein content than most cake recipes.

Using the "" I "sprayed" the pan lightly with canola oil and "floured" it with an AP GF mix (my own blend). My oven is pretty accurate and I found it took about 5 minutes longer to bake than what the recipe stated. After cooling 10 min so, I turned the pan over onto a half sheet pan lined with parchment. Perfect release - nothing stuck and the pan washed up like a dream!

    Decorating Tips:

After turning out the pan, I put the 1/2 sheet pan into the freezer for 10-15 min to firm up the little cars to make them easier to handle. Once well chilled, I trimmed the bottoms of each to get a perfectly straight bottom and clean lines all the way around. The now trimmed cars, right side up on the parchment lined half sheet, were returned to the oven for 3-4 min so the tops of the cars could brown a bit more. This is probably only necessary for GF baking.

    Happy Baking,

    Chef Stacy

  • Worked beautifully like all my nordic ware cake pans
    By M.Brown on 20 February 2017

Worked beautifully like all my nordic ware cake pans. Note for other bakers, you need two boxes of cake mix (or really a box & 1/2 and make some cupcakes with the leftovers). I used one box and it didn't go up quite to the top, stopped about an inch below. I created "the love boat" for Valentine's day, pictures attached.

  • Worst pan we have ever owned
By Alejandro Branch on 04 November 2019

This is by far the worst pan we have ever owned. I bought it as a gift for my wife. We have a few Nordic Ware pans and they have all been great. I bought this one, expecting a great pan. Boy was I wrong! We used it a few times to using different recipes and different things to grease the pan. All without success. EVERYTHING we used...same results.....stuck brownies that we had to dig out. I wish I could return it but unfortunately I can't because we are outside of the Amazon return window

  • Expensive Junk
    By MFamily2003 on 17 April 2017

This item quite frankly, sucked. Could not get the cake back out of the mold, we followed the directions that came on the pan. Tried 3 times with different kinds of cake, flour, no flour, cooking spray etc. to no avail. What we were able to pry out of the mold was un-usable. My son really wanted these for his birthday party but we were unable to make it work. Have used other pans with no issues. Waste of money.
