  • Waist runs about 2 sizes large.
    By D.B. on 18 December 2016

I like the look of these jeans and the cut is slim but not skinny which is what I was looking for. The problem is that they seem to run really large in the waist and they didn't shrink at all in the wash. I can wear them with a belt and they are okay, but without a belt I have to hitch them up all the time.

  • Comfortable, true to size jeans
    By V. Red on 04 February 2017

Contrary to another review for these jeans, I feel the size is accurate. I wear a 34 and these fit like a 34. The jeans are soft inside and somewhat stretchy. I have worn them before they got washed and after they got washed and they did not shrink too much.

  • Great denim jeans! Love the color.
By Tyler Gerow on 27 November 2018

Usually wear 32 but wear 34 now in the hybrids. 34 is just a tad big in the denim.

  • Super crazy long in length. Fit is a bit snug. Looks cool though.
    By Steve K on 02 March 2018

If you don't mind taking these to your tailor, you'll be ok.
    -
First, you need to know that these are SUPER LONG. There's no size noted for the length. I ordered a 34" waist because that's what all my jeans are. When I got these and tried them on - it was laughable at how long they were. They covered my entire feet! Luckily I have a tailor just down the street so she worked on them for me. Even SHE Laughed at me when I put them on!
    -
Other than that, they fit ok. The waist is about right, little loose which I like. Feels a little tight around the legs - which is OK because I don't mind fitted jeans.
    -
The material is not great. Feels super stiff and cardboard-y.
    -
The look is nice. I like the dark blue with the classic brown stitching. Slimmer fit so you look clean-cut.
    -
Again, laughable length and the fit is a little tight. So if you don't mind spending extra cash to have these tailored, then it's OK.

  • Better than expected
By YSC on 17 April 2018

Honestly, I didn’t have very high expectations for the jeans. O’Neill is renowned for surf wear and surf boards. The brand was sold to Logo International in the Netherlands, and La Jolla Group is responsible for their products here in the US, other than wet suits, etc. So I imagined that they might be some low cost-low quality generic products with a good brand slapped over them for profit.

Yet my cynical skepticism has been mostly defied, as I can’t find much fault about this jeans to confirm my skepticism. The price of the jeans is around $30 at the time of this writing, which is on the low end of the scale.

Granted, it comes out of a plastic bag, with the rather generic looking black O’Neill patch (quite used to Levi’s brown patch; it’s made of the same paper-like material). The front pocket rivets also looks small and not on the coin pockets. There’s no adornments or rear pocket stitching marks, except the bottom patch for reinforcement.

O’Neill actually doesn’t seem to offer many variations their men’s jeans. The straight (this model) and the slim, and that’s it. This straight jeans is the traditional and basic pattern: mid-high rise, straight legs, zip fly.

The “RAW” denim looks and feels similar to the Levi’s raw denim offering, in that it is very stiff, looks unwashed, and smells unwashed as well. It will soften when washed, will probably discolor, and shrink a bit. Yet the approach also makes it the most personally fit jeans as the fabric conforms to your body over time, rather than coming out of the factory deconstructed.

While not a “fashion brand” with only one standard jeans offering, the dark blue color of the RAW actually looks very good and rather fashionable. It is also a very versatile color as dark wash jeans are almost acceptable as semi-formal wear these days.

The inseam is measured 32”. There doesn’t seem to be any choices to this matter, both on Amazon and from O’Neill. It’s a pretty standard and popular inseam length for jeans, but may be too short or long for some people. I’m 6’2” and I’ve been buying 32 inseams with recent switch to 30” for a cleaner look. This one fits me as expected for a 32” inseam.

I’m actually pretty shocked at how well this jeans fit me. Usually jeans are difficult to get fit well, hence the various cuts, styles and sizes. Without much fuss the jeans slipped on without any bagginess or feeling too tight anywhere. It was a much nicer fit than expected. I imagined that it would be a bit loose to fit more body types, especially given the limited number of cuts they have. Yet it fit quite well, and in fact better than some jeans I picked out after a dozen trips to the fitting room.

The construction appears to be surprisingly solid, with extra durability measures. The raw denim, while stiff, is also of a pretty decent thickness. There’s actually double stitching on the waist band where it connects to the jeans. The front pockets are lined with this dense, tough and stiff black fabric, that’s probably cotton but almost feels like polyester when new. There’s also an extra layer of that liner to the bottom of the back pockets, stitched-in for reinforcement. You can actually see the line of denim colored stitch to the bottom of the back pockets. These extra measures are rare even in very expensive brand name jeans, and I personally had too many experiences of the jeans pocket developing a hole way too early. The top side stitching also has a pretty heavy reinforcement at the tread’s end. I really appreciate these little honest details for not flourish but durability.

This jeans is built almost like work-wear, like the denims were originally intended. The nicely weighted raw denim with its nice dark wash also makes it quite fashionable. While I can’t speak for everyone, for me it fits surprisingly well, with straight legs and a fairly traditional cut. Given the nature of raw denims, it should soften and fit even better with time. The low-key details that were not very noticeable but added for durability, certainly pleasantly surprised and earned my respect for the brand. Given the price, I really can’t find much at fault. In fact, it went quite a bit beyond my expectations. It’s so far proved to be an honest product for the money, to say the least.
