When inclement weather is on the horizon, slide into the versatile Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier Convertible Women's Jacket. With its removable sleeves, you can adjust to the conditions on hand, in real-time, so you're never caught out by a sneaky storm or surprise sunburst. Pearl's Elite Barrier fabric sheds wind while providing light water-resistance for coverage during sudden storms. When the weather breaks, removing the sleeves and stashing them in the back pocket is a quick and easy solution to your coverage conundrum. Pearl also incorporates its Direct Vent extra-breathable panels around the underarms and back in order to provide extra ventilation to the core. When things are a little chillier, the inner collar's micromesh lining adds a soft and warm sensation to the neck when fully zipped up. The full-length front zipper also does its part by featuring an internal draft flap and zipper garage to prevent discomfort from cold air and abrasive zippers. Additionally, adjustable hook-and-loop closures at the wrist and a one-handed elastic draw cord at the waist keep drafts out and your body heat in. Reflective details help keep you visible in low-light conditions, and the combination of zippered hand and drop-in back pockets keep your ride essentials accessible.

  • Exactly what I was after, extremely comfortable, great fit
By Natalala on 17 June 2016

I will briefly talk about the product, but am going to concentrate my review on fit because I think that is the main issue when buying online.

Product: Pearl Izumi produces high quality cycling specific garb and this certainly meets my expectations. Excellent bright colour that is highly visible even in low light (e.g. dusk). Extremely lightweight (very slightly translucent) so can be easily packed away/transported and does not add bulk. Adds an effective windproof layer but is breathable and comfortable in both warm and cool conditions. Zippers are snug to maintain wind proofing, and pockets are a good size and well placed. Personally I love the elasticised sleeve cuff for a no fuss fit (I know older models have a velcro feature which allows for a tighter fit). Also love that this is a versatile garment and can be used all year round.

Fit: So I am normally a size 'S' (AU10, EU38) 168cm tall, 60kg, 'athletic' build. I agonised over whether to size up or not, and in the end I sized up to an 'M'. Although I cannot compare the S to the M, I am happy with sizing up for my purpose - commuting on my bike. The fit of the 'M' looks on me as it does in the picture, i.e. form fitting and not tight anywhere. I can wear layers underneath if I want, but I can wear it over something tight without having heaps of extra material flapping about. My main concern was tightness across the back, shoulders and on the arms, and these areas are cut generously and are very comfortable, even with layers underneath. The only area where the fit is a bit closer is on the hips, so if you have wide hips/bottom heavy, do take this into consideration. In saying that, the fabric has some stretch to it and probably would not be restrictive even in a tighter fit.

In summary, I would suggest the following about sizing: If you are a road cyclist who wears proper riding garb (tight fitting lycra) OR if you are on the 'smaller' end of your size scale - buy 'true to size'. If you are a commuter/runner who wears whatever (i.e. not super tight stuff) OR if you are on the higher end of your size scale OR if you want this as the final layer over a fleece - size up. Also note: this garment is MEANT TO BE CLOSE FITTING, so if you want a loose jacket, or something to layer over bulky items, this jacket is not designed to fit that way so you would have to size up 2+ sizes.

  • Outstanding / My 2nd Purchase
By Tara Langdon on 27 February 2016

I replaced my 2012 Elite Barrier Convertible jacket with this one. I absolutely love these jackets for running. The only thing I miss on this new version is the small chest pocket and the velcro wrist adjustments. The velcro was replaced by elastic which functions pretty well. This jacket is extremely soft and breathable but still provides excellent protection from wind, snow, and light rain. Since it's convertible, I wear it for all seasons. It will not keep you dry if you spend hours in the rain or encounter a heavy downpour, but very few products will anyway while remaining breathable.

The sleeves and back flap remove in one entire piece and can be rolled up and stowed in the back pocket. It takes some practice, but you can remove the sleeves while "on the run," but you must remove the jacket to put them back on. The jacket has a DWR coating on it, so if rain stops beading, be sure to reactivate or renew the durable water repellant, and this jacket will last an extremely long time. My previous jacket lasted over 5 years with very heavy and near daily use! I would recommend this jacket over and over again! It's well worth the price!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention sizing information. Yes, PI clothing does tend to run somewhat smaller than regular clothing and, in my opinion, are tailored more towards petite individuals. You should definitely refer to Pearl Izumi's official sizing chart to obtain the correct fit. Of course, if you plan to layer under this jacket, you may choose a slightly larger size than recommended. I am 5" 2.5' tall and weigh 106-110 lb, and the extra small PI clothing line always fits perfectly.

  • Awesome bright jacket + sizing tips for the avid cyclists buying this jacket
By FinCT on 07 December 2016

I find Amazon product reviews super helpful so I wanted to add to those for this product, especially since I consider myself tobe an expert on cycling jackets, I have a different perspective than may other reviewers of this product. Usually I buy such things from cycling websites where the other customers are like me (avid cyclists). I was surprised here to read the reviews saying the jacket was somewhat small and to size up and that pearl izumi is a more cut/ smaller fitter brand. In fact, as cycling clothing brands go, they are one of the more generously cut brands out there (anyone who buys lots of cycling clothes knows thit), for example as compared with the Italian brands. I suspected the sizing would be the usual PI sizing in which I am always a small, and I have a very similar jacket from about 5 years ago in a size small from PI. Nonetheless, I ordered the medium because of the reviews, the fact that I bought this for winter layering, and because it was returnable.

I can confirm that this is NORMAL PI sizing- it is not small. The medium is too big, and if I wanted an appropriately fitting jacket, I would exchange for the small. That said, I bought this specifically to wear over jerseys with 3 back pockets stuffed full, and so I decided it is ok to use the bigger size and I wanted to wear it so did not exchange. I will say that my size small from 5 years ago does have pretty narrow arms (and while I am a small, I am very muscular, so I have relatively large arms). So it is not like that one fit me perfectly either, but I think that unless you specifially want an extra roomy jacket, do not size up.

Now, beyond that, I LOVE this jacket. The screaming pink is fluorescent pink (you can;t really tell that from the pic on amazon). That is what I wanted, and I LOVE it! Fabulous color, and super visible. Since I started wearing it, the crazy CT drivers seem to at least sometimes be giving me more space. There are some reflective accents (just those stripes on the arm zips), and they are small but a great touch. I don;t intend to use it as a vest, but I tried to unzip to see how that works and it seemed simple enough.

It's been in the 30's to low 40's, and I bought this as an extra layer to keep out wind on top of my base layer and fleecey jersey layer. I had been using a vest. The jacket is a huge improvement. And it is not making me sweaty and seems to breathe (that said, it's in the 30's... does anyone sweat in that weather/).

All in all, I LOVE this jacket, and highly recommend it. Everytime I looka t my arms on my handlebars I am happy when I see the pink. I just wanted to write in to give my two cents on size- if you are an avid cyclist used to cycling clothes and fits, go with your normal size.

  • Very pleased - neon pink - definitely runs a bit small.
By TG on 24 May 2017

This is a great jacket, although I agree with other reviewers that it does run small. I usually wear a medium, size 8 jeans - 150lbs and 5' 9". I'm what they call 'pear-shaped' so I have hips! The size Large fits but with very little room to spare around my hips. I'm not big busted, so no issues for me there. I have long arms but the arms on this jacket are very long - good for cycling as it allows for movement, bent elbows etc. You can also see there's plenty of arm length from the picture. I live in a warm climate so can't imagine I will need many layers under this jacket, which is good. It kept out the breeze this morning on my bike ride to work and I was plenty warm enough in 58 degree weather with a very light sweater and camisole underneath - and wasn't sweating by the time I'd biked the 5 miles either. The sleeves detach easily and will be perfect for the summer months. I purchased the pink - it's a bright neon pink which the picture doesn't show well at all, but that's what I wanted so I'm seen easily on the roads! For the price I paid for this jacket, I am very pleased (it was under 50)

  • My favorite jacket!!
By wbluvsrb on 11 April 2017

I love this jacket!! I went with the reviews and sized up from a small to a med. Definitely the right decision. Looks good on and comfortable to wear. Went with the aqua/mint color and it is beautiful. Not a crazy bright color but noticeable forsure. Love that the sleeves come off easily for even more comfort. This jacket runs over 100 dollars so this is a great price!!
