You never know exactly where you're heading when you start a ride, so if having a shoe you know can handle off-trail wanderings and new routes is important to you, we'd take a look at the Pearl Izumi Women's X-Alp Launch II Mountain Bike Shoe. Light and responsive on quick after-work rides with your girlfriends, but rugged enough to handle long, rambling weekend rides, the X-Alp Launch II makes an ideal companion as you improve. Pearl wisely starts with synthetic bonded uppers, which come devoid of any traditional seaming. This allows the shoe to adapt to a wide range of foot shapes, and cuts down on the likelihood of hot spots or pressure points interrupting your ride. We're fans of the BOA dial and hook-and-loop strap lacing system; the BOA dial gives you nearly unlimited control of fit around your instep, while the strap addresses fit around your toes. Underneath the shoe, you'll have a cushy EVA midsole providing all-day comfort, partnered with a carbon-reinforced composite shank that will ensure you get the power transfer you need on steep, unforgiving climbs. Grippy carbon rubber lugs along the outsole dig into the ground when you're inching your bike along gnarly cliff-side rock gardens and leaving your bike to go snap a picture of a sweeping view.

  • Fantastic shoe for enduro
By jlc on 03 June 2018

Fantastic shoe for enduro. Great grip on the pedal if you take a few seconds to clip in during a start or an accidental pop-out mid-ride so you’re not left fumbling for the clip ding a technical section. I’m used to a super stiff shoe for cx riding but so far these are very comfortable without foot fatigue and reasonably stiff. I can go from tail then jump on the car and drive without needing to change if I’m a rush. Local trails are very rocky and these offer enough protection from rock-to-pedal/shoe strokes that otherwise would have been painful. Bonus: resistant to water splashes (not water proof) and wipe down easily. Love them !

  • Nice mechanism to close shoes. Good looking
By Berta Dora on 11 May 2018

This is my first pair of Cycling shoes so I have nothing to compare them with. They look good and I finally found a pair that fits. they run small which I believe is "normal" for cycling shoes.
I was first confused by the mechanism that is used to fasten the shoes but now I really like it. No laces that could get caught in the chain or whatever. Nice.
I use these for indoor cycling only and I don't walk on these shoes so no comment on that.

I have four Pearl Izumi road cycling shoes with the BOA closure. ALL of them are a size 41.5 so this is the size I ordered in these. Wow! These don’t just run a little small, I think the fit is off by at least two sizes. What a joke. I bought them for $84, but to go up two sizes is $160! You lose this customer, Pearl Izumi. Plenty of other cycling shoe manufacturers out there.

  • I have other biking shoes and riding boots that are a size 39 and they all fit perfect, but again
By Heidi on 29 July 2018

Other reviews for pearl izumi shoes all said the sizes wrong small. I did not find this to be the case as these were too large. I have other biking shoes and riding boots that are a size 39 and they all fit perfect, but again, these 39 were too large. I tried some of the other style shoes and found the same to be true. Nice looking shoes, just not the sizing I was expecting

Had they fit I would've given it 5 stars. I'm a true 8 and these were just too small. I'll be returning them for a size larger.
