  • Perfect pencil
    By Phusion974 on 04 March 2019

I have a bunch of mech pencils (rotring 600, graphgear 1000, Alvin Draftmatic, etc....)and find myself picking up the graphgear 500 most of the time. The grip is the main why I tend to grab this, its thicker then the other pencils and find it most comfortable for me. Another would be the staedtler mars micro 775.

  • I find it alright, average in terms of feel
By powerop on 15 June 2011

In terms of ergonomics, its good to okay. I expected the whole pencil to be uniformly weighted, but most of the weight occurs at the bottom end where the finely knurled metal part is. The rest of the pencil (black portion) is light plastic so its off-balanced. I also prefer a round girth (outer cross-section shape) like most pens versus the hexagonal shape (like wooden pencils) that this one has. The metal hook is a bit long so it annoyingly gets in the way in certain angles, but luckily its detachable so I just took it off. The eraser is hidden under the shiny cap and uses those small skinny types. Maybe thats why there is an included high performing polymer eraser in the package. The lead included is nice, writes very smooth and good dark lines. I noticed that the long metal tip where the lead exits out is a bit longer than expected and is permanent (it doesn't retract into the body like some mechanical pencils). I do prefer a permanent lead support versus the retractable kind but the length of it takes a bit getting used to. For my hand-writing style, I hold my pencil close to the paper, but this one forces me to hold it at about 2mm further away. Doesn't sound like much, but I noticed the change. I would test it out with your normal pencil by moving your hand just a tad bit higher up and see if it effects your handwriting.

In terms of performance, I think it does great. It does what it sets out to do. I like that when you click the cap for more lead it comes out at finer increments than most of my usual mechanical pencils. No more worry of lead breaking off from hard handwriting. Both the lead and eraser(s) perform well and attest to Pental quality. I think it all boils down to your handwriting preference.

  • AMAZING PRODUCT
By Amazon Customer on 24 April 2016

I LOVE this pencil so much! one of my all time favorites I've ever used! I read in another review how this pencil is very bottom heavy - and that is a good thing! It makes writing long essays or drawing for a very long time a lot easier on your hand! The lead is SO smooth and this pencil writes so smoothly it's almost unheard of for a pencil! I highly recommend this pencil to everyone. I usually write fairly hard and my hand gets tired very easily, but this pencil has done wonders! I would buy it again and so far nothing seems faulty about it! Also, what a great package with 12 pieces of graphite and an eraser!

  • Perfect!
By Cynthia on 14 July 2017

Love Pentel products so when I was searching for a replacement for my mechanical pencil, I hoped Pentel offered one that would meet my needs. I'm an artist and need a pencil and eraser for detail work on a variety of papers from onionskin to heavy watercolor stock. Pentel GraphGear 500 offers the perfect weight and solution for my needs!

Having some difficulty finding replacement erasers for this pencil, however!

  • Great Value
By Daniel Adam Dutile on 14 July 2019

For the price this must be one of the best mechanical pencils you can buy for daily use. The metal knurled barrel makes for a positive grip. The rest is black plastic but still very durable and keeps weight down. The mechanism dispensing the graphite is as good as more expensive pencils. It may not be as robust as my Rotring, but if it gets lost in the machine shop, it's not nearly as big a hit to my wallet.
