  • Overall a worthy contender-- especially at $10. Keep eraser cap tightly screwed in place!
By Netizen on 12 November 2016

Very nice pen. Replacing a Cross Tech 4 the pocket clip of which became so loose as to make it impossible to secure it safely in a shirt pocket.

The Vicuna is a bit bulkier than the Cross, and doesn't rest as comfortably in the hand, but is reasonably comfortable. The finish is very good, but, again, not quite as nice as the Cross. But, the Cross, in my experience, develops this problem I've mentioned with the pocket clip losing its grip. Then you lose the pen. Cross requires $10 plus your shipping expense to repair the pen, so, in the end not so practical.

Enter the Vicuna. With the caveats mentioned, it is still a worthwhile contender for those seeking a highly usable multi-function pen, and for the price of the repair on the Cross, I think the Vicuna is quite a fair solution. Crosses are made in China these days and the quality that was once their hallmark simply isn't there anymore. Pity.

One other point to make, and then I'll release you to continue shopping: The end cap that covers the eraser threads on and can become loose, resulting in loss of the cap. This is a weakness shared with the Cross Tech 4. If you are attentive to thread the cap down firmly after using the eraser, you'll likely be fine, but I somehow managed to lose mine. Wrote to Pentel to request buying a replacement and a spare or two in case it happens again that I lose the cap.

  • Vicuna or Evolt? I've used them both.
    By Jacqueline C. on 27 September 2017

My 1st multifunction pen was an Evolt. Took several good drops until one day it landed just right and broke the plastic threaded section holding it together. I've been using a Vicuna for about 1/2 year now. I wish I could take the best of both pens and make one good one. To me, they both have pros and cons.

Vicuna Pros- Slightly smaller, good solid assembly, nice stock ink (but can put in any refills). Cons- Eraser cap is screwed onto cheap plastic- being careful not to strip threads, but making tight enough so I don't lose it. Some people like the non-stop spinning of the barrel- me, not so much (see below) plus it doesn't have a strong snap when retracting the ink or pencil. I'm waiting to write on my shirt because it didn't fully retract. Rounded tip is a little hard to focus around.

Evolt Pros- I like the fact that it has a stop both direction. Once you get used to it, turn it to the stop, then turn back to your desired ink or pencil without having to look at the tip to see what you have out. A little annoying on the Vicuna to me that you always have to look at the tip to see what's out. Evolt has metal threads on eraser cap and an o-ring to help cap from coming off- great design. I actually like the pointier tip. Cons- a little larger than Vicuna. Stock ink not as nice, but can insert anything. Definitely the threaded plastic holding it together- weak design that can break if dropped just right.

Now if only someone made a pen with these pros in this price range......

  • Very similar to Skilcraft B3 Aviator
By bigbogie on 31 October 2018

I bought this Vicuna EX multi-pen as a lower-priced alternative to the Skilcraft B3 Aviator pen, which is all black and costs twice as much, but is otherwise very similar. With a grip diameter of only 9.6 mm, the Vicuna EX feels pretty much like a regular single-color pen. D1 size Vicuna hybrid-ink refills are pretty expensive; instead I like Pilot hybrid-ink BRFS-10F refills which are slightly less costly, and as a bonus both the red and black Pilot refills are marked at the tip so it's easier to tell which color you have selected.

  • It feels like a more expensive tool at half the price
By VMW on 15 December 2019

I was pleasantly surprised by this product. I have several multi-function pens and wanted to given this one a try. I am so happy that I did. It has the weight and feel of a more expensive pen but at a much more reasonable price. This is a great product.

  • Super classy - one of the nicest multi-function pens out there.
    By B. Bergman on 03 August 2015

Really nice combo! Pentel makes good products, but this one is classy, even for them. Good combination of tips, feels great in the hand, has a nice big eraser (under a cap) and even looks good just laying on the table. I sort of like/dislike the continuous cycle through tips. I'm used to every other pen where it clicks in one direction, and back in the other. This one just continues to go around, which means finding the right tip by feel is not easy. Fortunately, their red pen tip has a red band around it. Other than cost (a bit pricey), this is an awesome pen.

Update: love this pen/pencil more every day. I now like the continuous cycle (don't have to guess which way to turn), and it is one of the nicer, classier pens on the market. Works awesomely, as I'd expect any Pentel to do. I'm buying two more today. :)

Second update: I still really love these. I have several now, and get compliments all the time on how classy they look. I think these are one of the better multi-purpose pens on the market. Now, that being said, I dropped mine on the hard cement floor yesterday and noticed that all of a sudden, my black ink wasn't flowing so well. In fact, it became almost unusable within a half hour. I figured I had just coincidentally run out of ink. After trying to find refills here (they're about four bucks each - ouch!), I found other people had commented that their ink had stopped flowing after being dropped (all black, weirdly). I'm guessing that the Vicuna "ball" inside the ink tube gets dislodged and the ink doesn't flow well. I may try slapping it around a bit (that's always the solution when something doesn't work -- whack it!), but I've ordered a couple refills just in case. This is the ONLY bad thing I've noticed about this pen. If it's a trend, then perhaps this is a manufacturing defect. I'm still likely to keep buying these, though, because they're better than all the competition. Write on! :)
