  • Gets the job done -- made out of styrophome
By Kelly Adamo on 07 November 2015

So to begin, I drive a 2015 Vw Jetta, my dog is 25 lbs and I bought the large size. I added some pictures so you guys can see how he fits. The first day he didn't seem to like it too much, I had the strap all the way loosened but he could only lay down and it made him angry not to see out the window. The second day I tried just doubling up the straps so it was longer, he still didn't seem to like it. That's when I tried just attaching the leash to the metal part of the headrest which seemed to make Toby very happy and give him back the ability to move. Now that I'm looking at the pictures I've realized I should really put him in a harness instead, but FYI we were parked when I took the photos! I typically keep the window up unless I'm going 20-30 mph.

As far as the quality of the car seat, I have to admit I was disappointed. The cover is made out of a fabric that feels like felt and seems well made. The cushion appears to be an airplane sized pillow that is poorly stuffed. I may try putting a thick blanket in there instead. But really the biggest issue I had was what was under the felt- it was just a huge block of styrophome. For $52 I got a block of styrophome and a felt cover. I think I will keep it to serve as a model for what I will apparently need to build myself. I drive with my dog sometimes daily and I'm looking for something that will actually keep him safe at an affordable price.

  • I would not recommend using this tether that comes with this seat
By Joanne on 06 July 2015

The clasp that hooks on to the tethered portion of the car seat got stuck in my Maltese's foot while driving. He got his foot stuck in the tether provided by this company, and he ended up stepping into the clasp which tells me it is quite cheap(and small). When he tried to escape it, it pierced his skin on the right rear tendon above the foot. I was on a roadtrip in the US & took me over a half hr to remove the clasp, because he was biting and crying and panting the whole time. I did not need a vet, however for some owners, they probably would. I've done animal first aid before,
And had a kit. I used the scissors to cut the tether and some surrounding hair on his leg, and polysporin to loosen the clasp from his skin. It took over 30 min. By the way nobody came to help, even if I was in a lineup of cars& had the windows open with the little guy screaming& my friend holding him as my dog bit into his neck.
Needless to say, I use the tether that is built into my vehicle's car seat which is above this car seat. For future reference, I wouldn't recommend using this tether that comes with the seat.
The seat itself is nice. It's basically hard styrofoam shaped to a seat for dogs. U buckle it in underneath with the seat belt. I use a binder underneath to make it more level, cuz my vehicle has bucket seat style.
The cushion is quite lame. U might want to put an extra blanket or custom the cushion yourself.
The dye also comes off easily on your hands even, so I had to wash it three times!

  • Very ingenious design, sturdy and stylish.
By Dione A. Nancolas on 14 January 2017

I think this is so ingenious. My 7lb. 12' long Schnoodle looooves his seat. I love that this one seats my puppy high while it sits on the seat of my carseat and not hanging suspended halfway on the chair-back with those straps like the others. This means that when he moves around in the seat it is very stable and there are no straps in the front of him to hold the seat up so that he can chew away on them (he is so in the chewing stage). The booster seat is actually anchored to the chair from its underneath via the car's seatbelt, so no visual straps nor belts... very tidy. It also has a short leash that you hook into your dog's collar/harness to keep him tethered to the seat. I recommend using a harness as opposed to a leash for this purpose, that way your animal's back is restrained and not its neck. It is a simple design of fabric wrapped over styrofoam, but this makes it lightweight yet firm. There is also a removable cushion in the seat. You can take it out if you want your animal to sit deeper in the seat, but then the seat is hard, or keep the cushion in for him to sit higher and comfortable. At that height my pup is able to sit and see through the window, and I even have a little room to put one of his toys in with him. Now we ride around in style and everyone who sees it wants one. It keeps him stay put as if he tries to wiggle out, the short leash restrains him, so he just lays down comfortably until he falls asleep. Do not hesitate to buy this over the others. You will not regret it.

  • Have the medium and large
    By Kelly B on 03 March 2016

We love this seat! I have both the medium and the large. My five pound Chi uses the medium and our 15 pound terrier uses the large. They can both fit in the large. We use the seat and strap it into the vehicle with the seat belt. The straps on the car seat get clipped to the girls harnesses. We also use another device to tether them to the seat belt directly because I don't fully trust the straps on the car seat because they are sewn to the fabric cover and not the seat itself. The second device we use is by Petsafe and also clips to their harness. If your dog is more than about 7 pounds or has longer legs, go with the large. The girls love to be able to look out of the window! We have had the large seat for over 7 years and it's still in great shape. The pictures are of the large seat.

  • Booster Car Seat Showdown: Pet Gear vs. K&H Pet Products
By Inger on 15 March 2018

I bought this Pet Gear booster seat (PG) in size medium and the K&H Pet Products Bucket Booster Pet Seati (K&H)n size large at the same time several weeks ago. I installed one on either end of my backseat, leaving about a foot of space in between. I have 3 dogs, each weighing less than 10 lbs, and I've given them free rein in the back seat to sit wherever they want, and here's what happened:

All 3 dogs choose the K&H seat every time we go somewhere. The size large is bigger than it looks in the picture, and sometimes all three sit in it together. When not in the K&H seat, the dogs lie down on either the back seat or the floor - they're never in the PG seat. If I place them in the Pet Gear seat, they jump back out.

In the other K&H seat, they are at the right height to look out the window or stick their noses out if the window is down. They sit up much too high on this Pet Gear seat - it looks like more of a platform than a seat - they sit deeper in the K&H and can't fall off.

There is a big difference in the way each seat attaches with the seatbelt. The K&H is securely attached to the car's seat and does not wobble or flop around like the PG seat. It's would be nearly impossible for a dog to flip the K&H seat or work it loose from the seat belt., not so with the PG. I didn't like the way this Pet Gear seat attached to the car, it wasn't secure.

The K&H costs more than the PG (I got lucky and got them both open box from Amazon Warehouse, paid $33 for the PG and $59 for the K&H), but the difference in quality of materials and manufacturing is obvious. The material covering the PG was already separating on one side, and it just didn't look like it was destined for a long life.

Bottom line: Obviously the Pet Gear seat must work better in a different type of car or with different sizes of dogs, since it did get positive reviews, and it's very possible my dogs WOULD have used the Pet Gear seat if it was their only option (a booster seat is the only way they can see out the window - without it they are so little all they can see is the door handle) but when given the choice it was unanimous
    for the K&H.
