  • Great for beginning sock knitters--price was right
    By S. Kimbell on 11 April 2018

I bought this yarn because I wanted to try knitting my very first pair of socks, and the price was right. I didn't want to spend too much money on luxurious yarn since I knew my first sock project would probably not be super great workmanship.

I think the yarn is nice for the cost. I didn't have any knots as I unraveled it, although I did notice some of the yarn width varied as the color changed. I also noticed the yarn was less striped and more "splotched" as it knitted up. It did stripe, but the stripes went diagonally, and the foot part of the sock was definitely more splotchy in pattern.

I used one skein for each sock, and I knitted them up to the mid-calf. I had a bit left over from each skein. I've attached a photo of one of the finished sock, as well as what I had left over from the skein. (I used a size 2 DPNs to knit it toe up with German short row heel.)

  • QUALITY IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT ONCE WAS
By JColb on 06 February 2016

I have used Red Heart sock yarn for years. I make socks for my grand daughters. This year after buying the same "Heart & Sole' sock yarn in two different colors, I found that the quality is NOT the same. In both crocheted and knitted socks, the yarn was thin, and ran different widths in the yarn. Thickness of yarn was NOT consistent and was a very thin yarn. Some of the yarn was split and knotted together. I will go back to Kroy sock yarn. Kroy has never let me down and makes for beautiful, long lasting socks. There is a LOT OF WORK in making socks so a good yarn is necessary. Red Heart, listen to this critique of your yarn. Go back to the original quality.

  • Bad quality
By Renae Woolsey on 06 August 2018

Yarn quality was terrible. I worked a long time on this pair of socks, and the first time I washed them, and they had never been worn, they fell apart in the wash. Never again.

  • Never again.
By Rhonda Wilcox on 20 June 2017

I recently purchased this yarn and was not happy with the quality of it. It is now made with a bit lower % of wool and has no aloe. I always wind the skein into a cake for knitting and each skein had at least 4 knots in it. The knots don't always stay tied. I found that out when a sock I had partially finished started unraveling. The colors are beautiful but I will not be fooled again. It is also thick in places and thin in other places. Sometimes overspun and sometimes under spun and splitting. No more Red Heart yarn for me ,ever again. I also complained on the Red Heart FB page about this horrible yarn. This has nothing to do with the seller on Amazon. It's a manufacturer error.

  • Good Basic Sock Yarn At A Good Price
By Jeanne Fontaine on 26 April 2016

Nice durable sock yarn. I would call it medium soft - about the same as Paton's Kroy but thinner, a light fingering weight. It does soften upon washing. (Merino snobs beware! You will think it too scratchy) These are 50g balls so you will need 2 for a pair of socks. The colorway Bayou does not have as much green as pictured - more blue and red - but still nice muted tones. I was disappointed not to receive the same dye lots in the 2 balls I ordered although they are not too dissimilar. (you would think yarn sellers would understand about matching dye lots) Overall a good basic sock yarn at a good price.
